Not really. Trae makes too much money for anybody to be interested. Anyone competing would have to give away parts of their rotation. If Trae was making $25m it’d have been a much different market.

Pure salary dump by Atlanta to move on.

They didn’t want Trae to take his player option this offseason and stick them for $50m in midget they don’t want on the court.

Welp, at least I can finally stop trying to defend Trae's (heh) defense skills

Pretty sure Atlanta will still have 2 first round picks in this years draft and 1 in 2027

Atlanta tried to pair Trae with different combos for 7 years and they got one ECF trip out of it.

If they are gonna go with a D first oriented group of guards and wing guys as their core moving forward, getting a total pro like McCollum to help in the transition is a good move. It's gives Atlanta salary flexibility and a vet to work with the younger guys.

One of those itwo this year is a pick swap with Atlanta. If they continue to loose the Spurs will likely add another top-5 if they get lucky in the lottery.

He wanted to get paid. That’s it. Washington the only ones dumb enough and willing to do it.

Hawks want AD
Wiz have young guys that need a PG
Wiz have $60mm cap space

not a bad trade to see if Trae fits

He won’t be a long term fit, he’s a relic in this new NBA. Helps hit the salary floor next season and he will do some pick and rolls with Sarr but no Wiz fan wants this overrated bum on the team long term. AJ or Peterson paired with Sarr, George, etc. make the playoffs next season. Lot of folks think this is the same old Wiz but they aren’t (well they will be if they give Trae an extension) Wiz are full of long, athletic wings who can switch, defend, and shoot the 3. Trae is a midget that can shoot and pass the rock, but that’s it. Lotta yall sleepin on them Wiz kids though.

The easier path to that top-4 pick is to let him play

Trae Young is not a winning basketball player and is going to demand a huge salary.

He's a fantasy player that got hype for 1 year in college and 1 outlier playoff run.

Also, he's not even that good of a 3PT shooter. People just think he is.

I keep seeing this, and it's the most Hawks thing ever if they get him.

Even more Hawks than having the the #1 overall pick the year between Wemby and Cooper Flagg.

Why was Washington a preferred destination for Trae?

Only team that would take him by all accounts.

Trae is still a good player. The problem is he is simply not worth what he / his contract will demand. The nba has changed since he entered. He was always at a huge size disadvantage that has now been even further exacerbated.

exactly. They have to stop giving out max contracts to guys who aren't max players. The Wizards apparently didn't learn their lesson with Bradley Beal, and are going to pay Trae a ridiculous amount like a bunch of morons. Trae doesn't care, he's just looking to get one last huge contract.

The Hawks will now have $80M in cap space to use this offseason when Porzingis and CJ come off the books. That's why they made this trade.
I wouldnt' be surprised if they keep CJ next year too. If he's ok comign off the bench and being their main scoring threat that way, I think they would be very keen on keeping him in that role, just at a reasonable salary.
