When I go to see a movie in a theater, I don’t go to have some waiter walking by the whole time or have some dipshit next to me keep pushing a button to order more food. I want to be immersed in the story I’m going to see.

This. I have no desire to order/eat a burger and fries while I’m in a movie theater nor do I want to be around 25 other people eating while I’m a watching a movie. I’ll do that before or after the movie.

I think fewer but bigger/better theater rooms will be the answer, like the Dolby Theater or other premium large formats

They have the best theaters in their Dolby@AMC theaters. I basically only see movies at those theaters.

its not like the physical theater's will disappear, someone will buy it and reopen them most likely

I agree. I've never gone to a movie thinking I want to eat a meal while I'm watching this film. That's what restaurants are for. But what I'm discussing is if theaters as we know now do not exist, how will studios finance films for distribution, besides streaming? There will not be any 2B tentpoles to count on. Ok, so studios "run" theaters. It just seems to be a massive loss of revenue that all the price breaks and concessions will never begin to address dollar loss on ticket sales. Probably less product would be made in the future as a result. Maybe that's not a bad thing, or I'm just over thinking this scenario.

They’re toast. All the summer movies have moved and who knows when people will feel safe going back to the theaters.

How much revenue do you guys think that the new movies that were released for streaming made? Like The Hunt? I wonder if production companies will see it as easier to just make it available to stream right away at a higher price vs dealing with theaters

And small boutique theaters. I go to The Broad Theater in New Orleans. It’s a fun, 4 screen place, locally owned, food and full bar. I don’t mind paying a little more for a small cozy room with comfy chairs.

frick that and frick restaurant theaters.

I want Dolby.

Disney, Warner, Paramount... They’ll push for a government bailout of the theater chains or a change in the anti-trust laws to allow them to buy out the chains and have “Disney” and Warner” theaters.

Not really. Audiences are conditioned to CGI blockbusters. No matter how great your home setup is, it won’t be movie theater quality or size.

I can’t imagine many people would be willing to fork over $20 for a streaming title. That would cover a couple months of Netflix or HBO now.

Portland has it down. I have to admit it. $2 for a big slice of hot pizza and $4 for a glass of beer in a sofa seat

Would families though? I mean realistically taking you, a spouse, and two kids to a move is gonna be close to 40 in tickets. Even taking someone to a movie on a date would be close to 20 dollars in just tickets.

I'm just curious to see where the economics vs experience factors play in for people. Like its cheaper to stay home with your family and watch, but you don't get the experience of the theater.

I don't think theaters die, but I do think it is definitely an interesting situation.

Yeah $20 is too much. But would I pay a premium to sit at home on my comfy couch and have my own popcorn to watch a brand new movie? Hell yes. Drop the price as the movie gets old...

But will they find it worth it to continue those theaters as premium theaters and continue to work with Dolby? I hope so. They’re really fantastic and something you just cannot recreate at home. It’s basically the whole reason you’d see a movie in a theater with today’s home technologies. You can’t recreate that unless you’re wealthy enough to build one yourself lol.

Exactly. If anything, theaters will adjust and start shelling out for quality food and booze to be readily available at any time. Instead of that being a niche thing, it will be customary moving forward. Either that or we start seeing them lower ticket prices. But to say the day of the theater is over is just delusional.

frick that, I’d never go again. I’m not paying to hear people fricking eat during a movie.

this has already happened, with the anti-trust laws being opened for review back in November. not sure if a decision has been made official yet tho.

100%

Unless you dont want any movie with a budget over 100 million dollars. The theater is the only way to make that type of money.
