It was released in 1973 and set in summer of 1962, seemed like a distant past but would be like a movie released this year set in 2012

We didn't know who 12 year old MacKenzie Phillips was at the time, but her character is a huge Beach Boys fan and her dad (John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas) was close friends with Brian and the other Wilson Beach Boys brothers.

We didn't get the connection at the time.

My dad graduated high school in 1960 and absolutely loves this movie. He said it nails a lot of things about the era. I have been watching it from the time I was small. One of my uncles could have played Milner without changing a thing. Excellent movie. Stellar cast. Amazing soundtrack.

The dance scene when Ron Howard and Cindy Williams are dancing to Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and she is crying…one of my favorites.

The soundtrack was standard issue. There weren't really oldies radio stations at the time, so hearing these songs in a film was huge. In some theaters the audience cheered when the film opened with Bill Haley's Rock Around the Clock. What's great about the album today is that a few of the songs include DJ intros by Wolfman Jack.

As I mentioned, my dad was a mechanic and specialized in wheels/tires/brakes. He had a customer bring in a late 50s/early 60s Corvette that had a bad vibration. He did a front end alignment and had to take it out for a road test to make sure it fixed it. The car had been restomodded with a cassette player, and this soundtrack was in it. He said it was the coolest thing driving around in that car, with those songs playing.

Great movie with a great cast and THE MUSIC!!! Seen it at least 10 times and now watching again. My parents always told us when we were kids that the early 60s were the best part of that decade.

If you want a cheap, crude and fun version of American Graffiti, try Hollywood Knights if you can find it. Tony Danza, Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert Wuhl. 1980 flick.

George Lucas and the sound guy for American Graffiti labeled footage R reels and dialog D reels.

Someone asked Lucas for R2-D2.

This movie was huge when I was in junior high. It kind of launched the idea of 50's dances (the irony was that the film was set in '62 and dealt with the death of the 50's).

We are the same age. I remember seeing it in the theater so well. While the OP referred to it as a PG version of D&C, for my little 12 year old self, it seemed scandalous and I loved it! It's a fabulous coming of age movie.

Wolfman Jack - nobody knows who he is anymore. But as a teen in the 70s, hearing anything about him is quite endearing. So much nostalgia there. Makes me think of the Midnight Special. Must see TV along with American Bandstand.

Simpson's did it...

When Homer is trying to buy illegal fireworks in a store, they parody Toad's scene in American Graffiti when he's trying to buy liquor:

Terry Fields : Let me have a Three Musketeers, and a ball point pen, and one of those combs there, a pint of Old Harper, a couple of flash light batteries and some beef jerky.

Homer: Yeah, um, give me one of those porno magazines, a large box of condoms, a bottle of Old Harper, a box of panty shields, some illegal fireworks, and one of those disposable enemas. Eh, make it two.

My guess is negotiating with Colonel Parker, the cost, and Lucas’ taste in music. As much as they discuss The Beach Boys and Buddy Holly, there’s only two songs from each on the album.
