Loved the first 4 seasons

New one hasn’t been as good IMO

We’ll agree to disagree on reviews

The massive wait between seasons killed it for me more than the meandering same same plot.

I stand by my belief that they never planned on a 2nd season.
The creators said years ago that the original intent was going to be a completely new story each season. All new characters, new setting, new everything. Basically each season being its own separate mini-series.

Then season 1 ended up being such a massive hit and fans loved the characters so much that they decided to make the subsequent seasons a continuation of the same story line.

That actually would be a cool idea some years from now to do an anthology show where each season is kind of like a drawn out XFiles mystery/episode

This is only half-true. When the series was first pitched to Netflix, the Duffer Brothers pitched it as an anthology series. Netflix poo-pooed that idea before the series even went into pre-production. If you actually watch Noah Schnapp's audition tape from before he was cast, they have him reading lines from a scene from the second season.

I checked out after S2. Just way, way too much time in between seasons. It wouldn't be so jarring if the series didn't revolve around young children. I don't have a straightforward solution, but I strongly believe that the stuff coming out today should've come out five years ago.

Also the stupid long runtimes per episode starting in S4 is likely going to keep me from picking it back up. This isn't MASH. This isn't Avengers. The show isn't that epic. Cut that shite out.

I really liked S1 to be clear. But I was 29 when it came out. I'm almost 40 now. It's a show that leans heavy on nostalgia, but I'm nostalgic for the days when it was first released

My wife is still all-in.

Show went absolutely no where. They recycled the exact same shite, meanwhile the kids got way less relatable and endearing. They are all off-putting freaks.

It's an absolutely terrible show and has been the last few seasons

Did you watch season 4? I can see someone not liking S2 and S3 but S4 was a really good season of TV. This is coming from someone that waited three years to watch S4 because S3 was so meh to me.

Honestly even if someone didn't watch S5, it's worth it to to at least watch S4.

Can't find the exact quote, but I found the article: LINK

RollTide's comment right underneath yours is correct. I was only half right. The showrunners' original pitch to the networks was for an anthology type of series, but when Netflix decided to buy it, they had the creators change it to make future seasons part of one continuous story.

quote:

When the concept of Stranger Things was first pitched, the series was presented as an anthology series, like American Horror Story, the different themes of which completely transform each season. It's difficult to envision a Stranger Things story completely dropping the previous season's events, but the Duffer Brothers intended for Eleven's tale to be concluded within one installment. The creators took inspiration from Stephen King's It when it came to the show's development, since they toyed with the idea of a major time jump involving a brand-new story. It also makes sense that an anthology format would have been considered, since the popularity surrounding shows like American Horror Story, True Detective, and Fargo were established before Stranger Things came to fruition.

Thankfully, Netflix sidestepped the idea of an anthology and put their faith in a full-blown series with a continued focus on the characters introduced in Stranger Things season 1. The streaming service predicted that viewers would fall in love with the cast, especially the young characters, and that was absolutely true. Stranger Things continued expanding its original story and allowed viewers to follow the journey, all the while creating one of the most popular shows in recent years.

****POTENTIAL SPOILERS****

Honestly, my biggest issue is the lack of consequence to it all. There’s a large number of characters in the show at this point that have been added over the seasons. The threat is this terrible, merciless evil and somehow not a single character of consequence (other than ones that were very, very obviously at risk) has bit the dust in 4.5 seasons. It really dulls down the gravity of the circumstances when you know in the back of your mind they’re just going to pull something out of their arse and survive no matter how dire the situation presents.

Solid list for sure. The Wire and True Detective season 1 are both top 5 for me.

We'll see if they stick the landing, I hope they do, but I think S2 and S3 probably take it out of GOAT consideration for me. ANd honestly, just the time factor as well, it should never take this long to make a 5 season, 8 EP per season, TV show. That is just insane and their ages alone take out the believability you had in earlier seasons.

The first season was a masterpiece. It had a grey, dark, gritty, and mysterious atmosphere to it. Acting was realistic and believable too. You felt like you were watching a documentary of what life was like in a small Midwestern town in the 1980s.

Then it ended up being a huge success and the directors forgot as to what made it a success in the first place when directing the subsequent seasons. That’s when the series went downhill. Each season that followed got cheesier and flashier.

I gave up on it a few episodes into season three because I found it repetitive.

I’m good with that decision.

Yes. I’ll finish it but they should’ve ended it in 4. This season is off the rails stupid.
