Could it be made today?

Hell no. But that movie was one of the best comedies ever. Talk about brutal towards everyone which was great.

Django wasn't that much different
as long as the slavers and rednecks are the butt of the joke and someone deep into Hollywood makes it, maybe.

I saw that movie 50 years ago. Funny.
The thing I remember is Alex Karras (who watched rather than blocked Tom Dempsey's kick) punch the horse.

Had someone tell me a while back that the movie should be renamed "Blazing Racism."
It was a blue haired young person that just hadn't dyed their hair blue yet..
Had a good laugh in their face.

Barely got made when it did.
Mel Brooks has famously told the story of WB execs sitting through a screening then having a meeting where they gave him a ton of notes of things to change.
He dutifully took it all down then threw it in the trash at the end of the meeting because he had the final cut.

I don't remember it making fun of Jews. But yeah, everybody else.

Always thought it was a stupid and overrated movie, kind of like Smokey and the Bandit.
Also, we have a film/TV board.

I wouldn't believe this if I didn't have a neighbor who is very left and refuses to watch it because she believes it's racist. She was dumbfounded what I told her Richard Pryor was not only one of the writers but was the first pick for the role of Bart (his public drug problems at the time caused the studio to go a different route).

One of the all-time bests.
The Sheriff is near!
It's very telling that BET was the best network to watch this movie on, as they censored it the least.
Mel Brooks once said something to the effect of, "Yes, it's a racist movie. It's racist against white people."

I worked with a black guy that loved that movie.

I went with another grad student to a matinee, it was fairly crowded, the audience laughed so loud we couldn't hear all the dialog so, like many others, we stayed for a second show, and laughed at the same jokes and the new ones we had missed.
We even debated staying for a third, but it was getting late and the neighborhood was iffy.
Our DVD is before PC took over, and we cherish it.
