My friend and I are having this discussion regarding Dexter. He claims the whole show is garbage because the last season was so bad. I think this is a terrible perspective. Dexter was really good up until the last season, I don't let that final season dictate my feelings on the show as a whole.

That's like saying game of thrones is garbage just because the last season was bad.

It certainly can kill the rewatchability of a show.

GoT isn't garbage but the final season destroyed several character arcs

Some show's individual episodes are basically stand alone stories. Arrested Development for instance was like that so its poor final season doesn't affect the earlier seasons. Game of Thrones had an overall arc of the power struggle between the houses so the final season represents the conclusion and affects the earlier seasons. Dexter is more of the former than the latter. So i agree with you but your GOT's example is wrong.

pretty much every Showtime show does this - Starts well, drags on too long, ends with a thud.

So I won't say it ruins the shows, but when it's such a persistent issue, I kind of view all their shows through that lens

Praying The Agency - which is the best Showtime product in at least a decade - doesn't meet that fate

That’s a fair explanation. I do agree that some shows can be rewatched at any time regardless of how they ended.

Game of Thrones did end terribly, but I guess I still enjoy the earlier seasons of it and the experience it was watching week to week that I won’t let it ruin my perspective of the show as a whole.

Through Season 6 it was leading for possibly greatest TV show of all-time, those final two seasons took it out of consideration. The Wire lost some luster as well with it's final season too along with The Sopranos.

I haven’t watched a single episode of HIMYM since it went off the air.

Dexter was terrible after season 4. Those Showtime shows always fall off a frickin cliff.

Dexter
The Sopranos
Game of Thrones

Didn't ruin the shows whole run, but those last seasons left a bad taste in many people's mouths.

The Office's last couple of seasons after Michael left were almost too cringey to watch.

Nelly was just the fricking worst. So was Will Ferrell's character.

I enjoyed James Spader/Robert California though.

And Andy became unbearable those last couple of years.

this times 100. Still haven’t rewatched thrones and when Yellowstone finally dies I don’t think I’ll rewatch it ever again.

Yeah, I agree, fully.

Also, I feel like all of them started to have a shite ton of makeup. Dwight looked fake, just all around everything was completely different from where it started, in a bad way.

I've re-watched the show a bunch, but the last two seasons I simply skip. I haven't re-watched GOT or Dexter for that matter, so I guess it depends on the show for me.

Should we call this the Dexter effect or the Game of Thrones effect?

I think it depends. If it's a sitcom with no overarching narrative, then just don't watch the last season.

OTOH, if it's a show with a narrative and said narrative has an unfulfilling conclusion with a crappy final season - then yes, it definitely can ruin an otherwise great show.

I basically don't acknowledge anything after the original 3 seasons. They never should have resurrected that corpse. The short run is what kept it fresh.

There are very, very few shows that should ever go beyond 3 seasons. TV execs are already 20 years behind the curve as they keep squeezing the life out of their onions.

Similar to you, my take on this is you can have two types of bad endings. The Dexter-type ending doesn't make the entire series up until that point useless. It just doesn't end well.

The GoT-type ending makes the previous seasons pointless. Like, if that's the way it ends, there's no sense in watching the previous seasons because it's just a waste of time. I shouldn't become invested in these characters and stories because the arcs just crash and burn.

It can certainly put a damper on things, but ruin is a bit strong. Dexter is still one of the better shows of the 21st century. It just isn't as high on the list as it would be if the backend of the show was as good as seasons 1-4
