Cruel Intentions thoughts

No clue how or why I'd never seen this movie before despite my age but I just watched it for the first time this weekend annnddd it kinda sucked. I know it is/was super popular but man I just didn't really enjoy it.
-The entire movie is OVERTLY sexual. and I get it, it's a sexual movie. That's the point. But it seemed more like a young person sat down and wrote a screenplay that was just centered around sex and then they came up with a very loose/flimsy subplot beyond that. Very little actual substance.
-Cecile acts mildly retarded. I know she's supposed to be sweet and innocent but they practically Kevin Malone'd her.
-I don't even really undersatnd the point of her storyline anyway. Sarah Michelle Gellar's boyfriend dumped her for being too slutty and went with cecile instead. (Sidenote- this guy is apparently some cool badass yet he dumped SMG for this childlike moron? Seems far fetched). So SMG's big sinister plan is to make cecile slutty so that she'll start sleeping around then the bf will dump cecile too? What a contrived and illogical plan
-Reese witherspoon has somehow made the cover of a national magazine where she proclaims she'll be a virgin til marriage. She has a boyfriend. Upon moving to NY (and living with ryan phillipe's family) she continually denies his advances, which are clearly just ploys to get her to bed. So after about one week, she makes him laugh, which she sees as genuine and him dropping his hard exterior facade...so then she starts holding his hand and fallin for him? That was it? All it took to pull a 180 and go from "not on your life" to "ok I'll bang you now" was making him laugh? Come on
-At the end, the big bet that all viewers want to see the result of is never even concluded. Ryan Philipe dies, SMG has her diary shared so her life is ruined, reese witherspoon is deflowered, cecile is still a moron...basically nothing redeeming at all happens.
so I guess my main point of this rant is....why is this movie held in such regard? Or am I wrong and it actually isn't? I'm sure if I saw it at age 18 instead of 38 my feelins would be wildly different but it just seems like it has nothing actually going for it besides over the top sexual content. Which by the way, I'll point out the only nudity we got was a male butt. So wtf.

You know this is an adaptation of Dangerous Liaisons updated for 90s High School as a setting right?

It's an awesome piece of 90s nostalgia.
I recently rewatched it and didn't at all feel like it aged poorly.

Is it? I remember when it came out that it wasn't much liked outside of teens and young adults. I haven't seen it since then, but I remember it being contrived nonsense that checked boxes to get youth excited. It's an ok movie that is mostly just an empty shell.

SMG & Selma Blair kissing. I fail to see the problem.

Loved the movie when it came out. Saw it again much later and it has aged very poorly. Agree it’s not very good now.

Both of which are based on a French book which translates into something like “Dangerous Liaisons”. I just didn’t want to butcher the French of it.

I have a soft spot (or maybe hard spot) for him “giving a kiss” to Selma Blair.

Considering it's a "teen" movie, it's actually a fairly decent adaptation of the source material.

this movie made me have a Huge crush on Selma Blair ........ in a way I still do.
SMG was unbelievably hot as well, but Selma did it for me.
