Finally finished The Sopranos last week

The wife and I started it a couple years ago, and we trickled through the series. Any time we couldn't figure out what to watch we'd throw on an episode or two. So it was slow-moving for a while. Well she eventually got tired of it (despite liking it) and so the last several weeks since I've been holed up at home recovering from shoulder surgery, I finally decided to just power through the rest of it.
We had stopped almost through S4. So I finished S4 and watched 5 and 6. All in all, it's a really good show. But it falls VERY short in the GOAT discussion for me. I think part of the reason why is because I waited so long to watch it. I can see why it was so revered during its time. But I guess I'm saying it doesn't hold up too well IMO. But it's still high quality television.
Some gripes:
- The dream episodes. I borderline hated every one of those. And from what I gather those are some of the fan favorites?
- The overacting. People like Paulie and Sil were just hilariously Italian. Like so overly so that they were caricatures. Especially Sil with his facial expressions. ; And don't get me wrong, I liked both of those characters. But they were very unintentionally funny for me. Same with Tony's accent. It's like he poured it on thicker and thicker each season to the point where it just sounded funny.
- The expansion of S6. There was so much unnecessary shite in S6 that could've been skipped completely. The 2-episode dream arc when Tony got shot. The entirety of Vito in Mayberry (sorry, Gayberry). A lot of AJ's idiocy. Etc. It just felt like useless filler for the most part when they could've stayed focused and had a tight 13-episode final season.
- The incredibly slow pace. There were times when I couldn't imagine having to wait week to week to watch episodes. I'm glad I was able to binge it.
But all in all, it was really very good. I don't think I'll ever be in the mood to rewatch it again, but I am definitely glad I finished it though.
Also, I knew how it ended already. I had seen that scene not long after it aired and read all kinds of things about what it meant. But man, watching it in the moment I would have likely been pretty pissed off about how it ended. I get it, but it could've been done so much better than it was I think. I get why there was such a controversy about it.
So for those who have seen it, where would you rank it? Are there any people out there who have it as slightly overrated like I do, or should I go frick myself?
Side note: During my recovery at home, I also watched:
- Banshee. Finished up my first watch (see the watch/rewatch discussion thread). Wild shite.
- Silicon Valley. I had originally stopped watching some time around S4, so I started it over and watched through to the end. Loved it (despite the obvious gripes that those dudes could never fully "win"),
- Cobra Kai. I caught up on the ne half-season. Solid (but not great).
- The Leftovers. I started this one. Watched the first episode a few nights ago. I plan on powering through this one over the next few weeks.

Paulie has a real life back ground in the Italian mob and he’s never really acted a day in his life. That’s authentically him. All these guys are Jersey Italians, 20 years later you can still find people with accents and mannerisms that seem cartoonish.
Sil, I’ll give you - I believe the creator was a big Springsteen fan so he gave the role to him for that, he’s still a great character but acting is not really that guys forte

quote:Chase saw Little Stevie's speech for the induction of The Rascals into the R&RHoF, and thought he'd make a great Tony. When he auditioned and Chase saw he wasn't a good fit for that role, he created Sil, because he really wanted Van Zandt's personality on the show. I think it was a great call.

I always thought it was interesting how Artie was one of the finalists to play Tony, along with the guy who played Jackie Aprile

I also didn’t watch the show in real time. I had the season 1 DVD set as a gift when I was injured and on medical leave for a few weeks as well
And then I streamed the rest of the show afterwards, so I don’t know how I would have reacted watching in real time, but I suspect I wouldn’t have found it as off putting as you did.
It’s on my goat list (top 5-10).

That is pretty much how they are in real life, they werent acting. Hell, the guy playing SIl was not even an actor he is a guitarist in the Springsteen E Street Band

I am currently re-watching it now and in season 2 and I think it holds up very well.

See this is what I mean. It's good, even really good. High quality. But nowhere near GOAT status for me. Like not in my top 10 or even 20 most likely. But admittedly I think that's because I waited so long to watch it.
I can definitely see how it influenced shows (especially HBO shows) that came after it though. So while it isn't my favorite or a GOAT, I can still respect and appreciate what it did for television quality.

I absolutely hated all of the boring scenes in Dr Meli's office. Also, the mother/son issues were aggravating.
That show featured some of the finest Italian women ever. (Which is my favorite type of woman)
Sofia Milos (Although Swedish) who played Annalisa Zucca was gorgeous!

I mostly agree with this take.

It is a show about the minutia of life and how that even applies to gangsters. I found that to be a key element. It had humor, drama, and mundane aspects just like real life does.

One of the best and most original series of all time.

The Sopranos started the year I graduated HS. I watched every episode weekly and then would rewatch the seasons prior to the new season coming out. I've seen the early seasons of The Sopranos more than any other TV show. This is easily one of the top TV shows ever for me. I probably put it at 2 behind The Wire which I binged years after it stopped airing.

I know all that. I'm saying it made it harder to take seriously when you have Sil with that "Ho, I'm Italian!" look plastered on his face 100% of the time. It just felt silly at times.

I think S3-S5 are very good. But the first 1+ and half of S6 drag down the quality a little for me. There were definitely times when I turned to my wife and was like "This show is really fricking good." Then there were times where I wondered where that show went.
