I don't know what I was expecting from Denzel, but it wasn't this. His mannerisms, personality, speech is just off. I expected something more grizzled, slower and deliberate with his lines—a wise former champion, ya know, like Proximo. Not Denzel from the south side of Chicago
Seriously, it’s Frank Lucas/Alonzo in Roman times. At least lose the gangster style accent Denzel, extremely out of place

I mean, they slayed rhinos in the Coliseum, but no one rode them. Rhinos are stupid and have extremely poor vision where they’re basically blind.

Lucius the little boy aka Haley Joel Osman grew up to be an evil tyrant like Commodus.
I think the new main dude might be Maximus son who survived or a bastard of maximus.
I’m pretty sure you never saw Gladiator.

I get that, but that is far from the worst thing about that trailer

-Had no hopes for this movie.
-Trailer overall looks good to me though. Production, lighting, costume design all look great to me.
-Denzel's story does not appear to be DEI box checking, I'm a fan of his, but as others have pointed out his accent/tone/mannerisms standout big time in a bad way, almost too cool & smooth for those times. This could be the biggest issue for me when the film comes if he will play a large role as it appears and he has lots of screen time & dialogue yet will feel like he doesn't belong.
-Pedro Pascal does have a good screen presence even with minimal dialogue in the trailer, but as others have mentioned he always look like Pedro Pascal even though the look does fit here. So that's not really a knock, at least not until we can watch the movie to see how he does.
-Paul Mescal I've heard his name but honestly don't know from what. Looking at his acting credits I have not seen anything with him in it. But I thought he looked fine for the role from the trailer alone.
-Colusseum has history that says they flooded it for naval battles, and it definitely featured animals in the mix of battles so I have no issue there. It's a movie so naturally they are going exaggerate & sensationalize some scenes, so I'm fine with it
What are thoughts on Mescal's character? Who is he, where's he from & who's his parents?

Is he not Lucius? That’s what I gathered from the flashbacks on first glance but could be wrong

Didn’t really know him either … a couple years ago he had a best actor nom for Aftersun.. so I watched it.. and man.. what a crushing movie .. he plays that so great.. he has his own demons and coming to grips with his little girl growing up into adolescence… I think it’s on Netflix now.. worth a watch.

It'll be a flashy spectacle that'll be missing all of the depth that we had in the first movie.

So have they recast Lucious from the original? Is he the emporer, or the gladiator?

If I had to take a guess he’s a leader of mercenaries and a weapons dealer from Ethiopia, which the Romans actually had a pretty good relationship with.

That was my thoughts as well, but I thought others showed on here earlier that Pascal was Lucius?
Nevermind. I see I read it too fast and mixed up there names. They're too damn similar, Paul Mescal vs Pedro Pascal lol

Lucius is played by Paul mescal.. the new "Maximus" is already known to be him
quote:
Oscar nominee Paul Mescal plays Lucius, the nephew of former Emperor Commodus and son of Lucilla, although he is unaware of his royal lineage. In the 2000 film, Lucius was played by Spencer Treat Clark and here, a fateful turn of events finds him becoming a gladiator like his childhood hero, Maximus.

The frick? Did Lucious get bonked on the head or something and forget he grew up as the upper crust of Roman society. How does he forget who his mother is? Kid was like ten, twelve.
