It's unfathomable that there are writers out there who think it's still actually in demand.
There’s a bunch of scripts out there and scripts get stepped on all the time by studio. It’s not like a cartel of writers keep writing this stuff, it’s that those scripts are the only ones getting greenlit by studios. Some suit at Sony is going “make this funny like Thor 3!”
Half the new movies I see these days you can see the stitches of where post production edits and reshoots came in to give a broader appeal to the material even when a good script makes it past that initial stage

Jason Blum on the box office faceplant:
quote:
Blum admits, “We all thought M3GAN was like Superman. We could do anything to her. We could change genres. We could put her in the summer. We could make her look different. We could turn her from a bad guy into a good guy. And we kind of classically over thought how powerful people’s engagement was really with her.”
quote:
We’ll never really know why this movie didn’t work,” Blum ultimately admits. He notes at a different point, “Even if the financial results are not there we took a shot, right? We said, can we take this horror movie and turn it into a crazy sci-fi action, whatever. And I think there’s so much pressure on originals and there’s so many fewer originals that what I hope M3GAN does is it doesn’t discourage other people who make sequels to now make them too close to the first. I think there’s some sequels that are very different and that do work. This one didn’t have to to be, but we took a creative risk and I really hope that people continue to take creative risks within the walls of their franchises, otherwise the movies will feel all the same.”

First one worked in the same vein as Child’s Play. It wasn’t that it was a good movie but it walked the creepy/uncanny line wel enough to make it interesting.
Had they doubled down on why people saw it in the first place, they would have likely succeeded the same way Childs Play 2 did (grossing $35 mill total on a $13 mill budget)

Y'all can frick right off. This movie was fantastic!!
My 10yo was mesmerized.
Hardly horror though.
Eta Teletubby m3gan is the best m3gan.
Singing Kate Bush is the best thing I've ever seen on screen.

Come on
It's going to be a cult hit like Big Trouble in little China. Mark my words.

Gemma: you killed 7 people and tried to strangle me.
M3GAN: ok so I was a little angry.

Have you even seen the sequel?

Never should have released as a summer movie. If they put this out in Sept or Oct, it probably makes a lot more money.

Finally getting around to watching it. 1st half has so good parts but they rushed some stuff. Too many moving parts & stuff just getting glossed over. I’m liking it more than I expected, but they needed to pump the brakes on this project. Oh well.
ETA - Finished it.
Wow, what a ... bunch of stuff. But honestly, I liked the basic idea of the movie. There was just too much of it and they sort of overshot the runway.
Some of the humor kinda worked, but generally not so much. At least they were self aware at the corniness.
Some of the action / fight scenes were really damn good. Can't deny that. I just think they took on more than they could deliver in such a short time. Needed another year to trim some story down and streamline it, imo.
Glad I waited to see it at home.
