What are you trying to argue? The point is the show depicted her as hot and desirable and most males in her orbit acted the same with very view exceptions.

I guess I never picked up the show trying to indicate she was even remotely physically attractive. Just that she had a good mind for advertisement and made that known through general talent.

I think those guys on the show would frick anything that moved and Peggy also was rising up the ranks with talent to boot. Not unbelievable all the horned up 60s dudes would take a shot looks or not.

I’m not saying she’s super attractive by any means but she wouldn’t have an issue getting a date in 1970s New York. The only time the show really goes out of their way to present her as sought after is the first season when she’s fresh meat in the office and every guy is coming at her for a quick hook up in the office. She gets pregnant and gains weight all that is gone as she transitioned to a copy righter vs a secretary From that point on she a few long term relationships on the show - most of the guys are attracted to her for other reasons than looks and moreso for her independence and aggressive nature in the dating scene, which she got from Don. They have a couple scenes that outwardly point to her as frumpy or not conventionally attractive. I don’t see where you see her getting made to look like some supermodel in the context of the show

This was a better way of trying to say what I was trying to say above

It wasn’t her looks. It was attitude. A forward woman was a rare thing in that time.

Yea, I can understand her character arc, but I think her casting was one of the only few flaws in the show. She's really homely.

I also wish they would have left Harry Hamlin out of the show. He's one of the most pedestrian and talentless actors I've ever tried to watch.

As great as the ending of the series was, I think my most memorable scene from that show was S5 E13 when Don is sitting at the bar with his Old Fashioned and the girl asks him for a light and then says, "My friend was wondering, are you alone"? All while Nancy Sinatra sings "You only live Twice". And that ultra smooth look he gives the blonde in return.
That to me was the epitome of Don Draper.
Just incredibly good television.

High points of the series:

Freddy Rumsen discovering Peggy and Peggy later rescuing Freddy from alcoholic embarrassment.

The staff finding Lou's comic strip pitch and making fun of it.

Duck taking a crap on Roger's white chaise lounge chair.

That episode is excellent. Tough scene when he’s getting in the cab and says “If I don’t come into that office every day, who am I?”

It also produced another one of Roger’s best lines when the hooker asks if he and Don are winners or losers… “Losers tonight, but winners in general”

Don is such an enigma....he is a great character and a complete POS. .

One in a long tradition of anti-heros. Terrible people that we somehow root for.

Tony Soprano, if not the first, is perhaps the most important one. And my favorite

Breaking bad took it to another level. From a regular guy, to anti-hero, to just plain evil. It got harder and harder to be Team Walt. I was done after the kid on the dirt bike got waxed by Meth Damon and he didn't seem to care. But, as with everyone else, was captivated all the way through.

I'ts not as good of a rewatch as the Sopranos...but as a TV artform, I think it's the pinnacle of the genre. I just haven't felt the need to watch it a third time--Sopranos has more to "love" in a rewatch.

Mad men is somewhere in the middle, rewatch wise.

I won't spoil it but one of my favorite parts is when Harry is "to late" and Roger says one line that just makes me laugh. And how much Roger and Don hated him.

Also, when Lane Pryce calls England during Christmas. Hahah

Fantastic Show.

The Freddy Rumsen story arc was one of my favorites in the show (minor spoilers).

When the show first starts Freddy is sort of seen as a bit of a joke around the office and even in a place where seemingly everyone has a drink in their hand his drinking is a frequent punchline. But he was the first one to recognize Peggy's talent and gets her involved in several projects which kickstarts her career as a copywriter. Later when he drunkenly embarrasses himself before a big meeting and gets "put on leave" it's revealed by Roger that Freddy saw significant action in WWII. Roger says it admirably, but it's obvious that Freddy isn't interesting in talking about it and the audience realizes for the first time that Freddy's alcoholism is largely due to undiagnosed/ untreated PTSD (a reoccurring theme throughout the show).

When he emerges later in the series he's working as a freelancer and is now not only sober, but actively involved in AA and in the sponsorship of others. When Don gets put on leave it's Freddy that he ghostwrites through and when Don is at his absolute lowest point and about to throw his partnership away Freddy is the person he calls (ostensibly to go to a ballgame, but deep down it was probably because Don knew Freddy was the only person who would actually help him).

Freddy gets Don out of there, gets him home and the next morning delivers an A+, tier 1 motivational speech that finally kicks Don back into gear.

"Are you just going to kill yourself? Give them what they want? Or are you going to go in your bedroom, get in uniform, fix your bayonet and hit the parade? Do the work Don."

Just incredible stuff and Freddy was never anything more than a minor character, not even in the top 20 most important characters on the show. Stuff like that is why Mad Men was one of the greatest written shows of all time.

Freddy was a great character, but I could never get over him smoking a cigarette while eating a sandwich. And drinking coffee. All at the same time.

Although I'm sure I saw older relatives do that when I was a kid.

the biggest pull she had was probably Pete and it was early season 1 when he was about to get married and was likely just reaching out for the nearest girl he could.

Notice it basically never comes up again after like the 1-2 times they bang.

Look at her hook ups with Pete:

1. Pete whiffs on a hot girl at his own bachelor party, so he shows up at Peggy's house to get some strange

2. Pete gets nut-checked by his wife about a Chip and Dip bowl, so he tells this sad story about being a manly hunter man, and then because Peggy likes it he bangs her in the office.

3. After the office clears out during the Cuban Missile crisis, Pete pours on the "ive always loved you" nonsense to try and get one more out of her, and that's when she tells him he knocked her up but she gave away the baby

After that close call Pete never made another move on her..

Roger’s mom’s funeral is one of the all time Roger scenes.

He and Freddie are the best characters. Stan is also pretty great. The Draper raper is an all timer but the masked self loathing gets to be a lot after you watch it a few times.

First few seasons though, where he’s absolutely dialed, is some of the best business television in history.

Roger was top notch.

I laugh when they were at Don birthday party and Megan is doing that song and dance.

Roger:"Why don't you sing like that?"
Jane: "Why don't you look like him?"

A black receptionist named Dawn is hired.

Roger refers to her as, "Darkest before the Dawn".

You know they loved writing for Roger.

I recently decide to watch it for the first time, and I got through episode 3 but the show still hasn't hooked me yet. I know this must pick up (like skyrocket based on how slow the first 3 episodes have seemed) based on everyone lauding it, but with really good shows I'm normally hooked by episode 3. Is this one of those shows that has a slow first season but then has a big jump in season two, or will the switch flip in this first season?

Pete: Did I miss something?

Roger: No. Don and I talk all the time when you're not around. In fact, we're about to do it right now.

Pete: Well, goodnight.

Roger: Goodnight, Paul.
