Not sure how you could rank any of those in some order, but i think Jaws has to be the most iconic. Kids today still know those notes. Everyone has seen Star Wars and Harry Potter and Jurassic Park. Those are 3 of the biggest movie franchises of all time, so of course they are iconic b/c of how great the movies are, not to take away from the score b/c obviously it's legendary, but i guess my point is for not being as popular today, everyone still knows the Jaws theme.
I"m not sure young people know the Indiana Jones theme, or the Superman theme, even though they are both great.
I think you can add Home Alone to the list as well.

It's Star Wars and it isn't even close.

Jaws and it isn’t particularly close.
Star Wars may be a staple of childhood, but the jaws notes transcend pretty much everything. They’re synonymous with fear in a lot of ways.

Until someone comes up with a single note (not a chord) that sends chills down your spine, this wins.

going to be hard to do.
I guess Jaws beats out the Halloween theme since it's 4 notes. I would say that theme song sends more chills down your spine than Jaws does.

This is a great thread and tough question.
Is it, though? The question is "Iconic." And it just doesn't get more iconic than the various Star Wars themes.
I love Jurrassic Park and Raiders tho too. To me the debate would be "what's the 2nd most iconic."

But are we talking just one movie? The Imperial March and Duel of Fates aren’t part of the original score.

I meant the whole series.
Same could be said for Jurrasic Park, Indiana Jones, Superman, etc.

Gotcha.
For all franchise movies, I would definitely say Star Wars. For just one original film, I might say Jaws.

Star Wars is the most well known.
Schindler's List is my favorite though.

Jaws
Just two notes of brilliance and everyone over a certain age knows exactly what's going on.
Star Wars is probably the "grandest" theme/intro. But I'd bet some casual movie fans would get confused as to if that theme was Star Wars, or Superman, or Indiana Jones.
With Jaws there is NO confusion. Everyone who hears those to notes knows exactly what movie they are from.

The man is just an icon.
There aren't many who can make the soundtrack as big (and sometimes even bigger) a presence in a movie as he did. I don't know that I even notice most modern soundtracks at all.

I actually think the opening single note of Star Wars deserves to be in the discussion.
It's one note before the song kicks and and it's instantly as recognized as well as sends chills

Bingo. My 4 year old knows jaws. It transcends movies in a way Star Wars and the others do not.

Personally I’d rate Jurassic Park above Star Wars
Jaws is the winner for sure though

Yes, but I feel like Home Alone is being underrated.

quote:Only one I have the CD of. When I lived in Dallas, on the drive home to Louisiana, I'd listen to it, or the Amadeus soundtrack, in East Texas, where the only radio was Country, Christian, or Rush Limbaugh. Some of Williams' Star Wars music is as good as any classic music I've heard.
Star Wars
Those are the only movie soundtracks I've bought. Was given the soundtrack from Good Morning, Vietnam and Forrest Gump.

The answer is Star Wars no question. The Jaws theme is right there though.
But for me personally, it’s Superman.
