I was late to the Shogun party. I watched it last summer. I noticed it cleaned up at the Emmy's. I assumed it would.
I thought it was incredibly shot, and set up an amazing universe/world. I was really invested in the main characters. I know nothing about the book(s).
I also thought it was really weak in a lot of cases. My biggest problem was the "don't tell me, show me" axiom. I get budget issues, blah blah, but how do you have a show called Shogun, but never actually have a battle?
Also, it seemed undecided on whose story was being told. Whose story am I watching unfold here?
I'm glad I watched it, I'll keep watching it. I felt they covered up a lot of flaws and weird choices with interesting characters, incredible world building, and a lot of Japanese manners lessons.

Given its success, they will have more budget for season 2 I imagine.
There is no more source material now though, so they will have to rely more on the actual historical figures the show is based on and make their own way

They had a limited budget and spent that on the wardrobe and Japanese houses and boats, which were spectacular. The CGI they used for the broad view of the cities and armies was pretty bad at times.
The book mainly tells the story of Blackthorne but Toranaga and Mariko are very important characters intertwined with him. I thought the series downplayed Blackthorne just a bit.
I would imagine the next series, which was not written by Clavell would have a budget for battles etc. By the way, the book is great and one of my favorite historical fiction novels ever.

The source material is like 50 years old and the show was pretty close to it.
And many of the characters and their stories are based on real people.

There were no battles in the plot. Only threats of them. Plenty of action pieces, though:
There was the ambush in the forest.
Navigating the ship through the storm.
Failed assassination attempt.
The cannon fodder scene.
Attempted murder of Saeki.
The earthquake scene.
Ambush inside Osaka Castle.

Finally got around to watching (thanks Hulu Black Friday special) Enjoying it well enough until I saw the girl playing Mariko. She's fine in this role but was so off-putting imo in the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters series on Apple.

I'm late to the party with this one since I've only watched the first episode a few weeks ago and enjoyed it but have not ventured past that.
I'm old enough to have seen the original version on TV back in 1980 with Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune as the 2 main male stars. It was an excellent series that I watched one more time a few years later.
Guess I need to catch up with the new series since I can stream it.

I haven't read the book. I tried, but couldn't get into it. I really enjoyed the series.
Questions:
Did the book end like the series did? With Toranaga saying "I'll keep that white man around. He makes me laugh.."?
There was a flash forward showing an elderly Blackthorne dying in his bed somewhere in what I assume is England. Was that in the book? Was it expanded upon?

SPOILERS (like really spoilers and there is a season 2 coming so don't read if you don't want to know:)
Season 1 was pretty much 95% of the book. There's now open war and the entirety of the battle transpires in the last couple of pages of the book in an epilogue. We know the outcome of the battle, but it gives very few details about what happened. I'd rather it be 2x2 hour movies than 8 episodes TBH.
The last bit is him talking about keeping Blackthorne in Japan forever. So yes... the ending result is the same, but the show left out the real conclusion.
