I just finished the last 3. There were many slow points, but having absolutely no knowledge of the books or game (to this point), I don't have any major issues with the story. The only frustrating thing is that its seems to have been reset with the 3 mains being separated once again. I'm intrigued by the story but not sure where to start. Is there a book I can start to get to this point and go on, or a cliff's notes of sorts to read to see where this is going?

That’s actually reflective of the books, although how it happened isn’t.

This season finished book 4 “A Time of Contempt”, and begin the next book “Baptism of Fire”, but I expect that the show runner will deviate further and further from the source material moving forward with Cavill gone.

The last time I recall a promising series imploding into crappy nonsense like this was Heroes season two. Why they thought introducing a ton of seemingly random new characters this season was a good idea, I will never understand. Just horrible.

New episodes a week ago and this thread is PAGE 5

Finishing up last episode today and damn this has been pretty boring, the entire season really other than the big action scene. I don't even feel that the plot moved at all. Whatever.

I think I'll start reading (well audio-booking) the books now

I'm glad this got bumped.

I did read The Last Wish (not recently). But I was thinking of just Wiki-ing the others. I do have The Wild Hunt game and have started it, but does it tie in to the books at all? I was under the impression that its stand alone.

The books and the games follow each other pretty closely with regard to how characters look and act, but the stories take place during periods of time not covered directly in the books so they could plausibly have been written by the original author and rough storyline (but weren't).

The show in comparison is a reimagining of the books with key characters acting in ways that are completely out of alignment with the books and events being presented in new ways that would not have fit in any consistent context with the stories either. Even when events do roughly align, the show writers have often chosen to present the chronological timelines out of order in an almost schizophrenic way that in my opinion distract from the story rather than enhance it.

Character Examples:
Dandelion / Jaskier: womanizing straight poet -> emotional bisexual freedom activist
Triss: manipulative white redhaired pseudo big sister to Ciri who repeatedly fights to protect her against terrible odds in the game and is desperate to be with Geralt -> emotionally damaged sorceress of ambiguous background who views Ciri as a threat to the entire world
Fringilla Vigo: Eva Green looking reserved and scholarly sorceress from Nilfguard who is a rival to Yennifer -> overweight black murderous nilfguardian puppetmaster
Yennefer: menacing and immensely powerful human white sorceress with purple eyes and dark hair with a deep need to be a mother who all but gives her life to protect Ciri -> half elf who tries to sell Ciri off to certain death after losing her powers only to change her mind and go back into book character for the time being
Vesimir: psuedo father to Geralt and grandfather to Ciri who gives his life to protect her in the games -> threatening old man who tries to sacrifice her in a scheme to create more witchers while selling out his psuedo son Geralt

The only character who was exactly true to the books IMO was Geralt which seems to tie into the rumored blowups between Cavill and the showrunners. I was taken by how incongruous Geralt's character felt in relation to the reimagined cast because he feels completely out of place in his own "narrative".

If you can watch the show and enjoy it for what it is, great. I actually think the actress who plays Ciri has done an outstanding job, along with Yennefer and Jaskier, given the plot they had to work with.

But as someone who has played the games and read the books, the show is such a cheap imitation of the original content that its not only irritating, its become unwatchable especially with the gossip relating to how the showrunners have acted and treated Henry Cavill who by all accounts was trying to do right by the IP.

I couldn't have said it better than you, tide06. I've played the games and read the books, and decided not to watch this season because based on what I've seen and heard, it would just piss me off.

Episode 5.

Thought I was watching Westworld again. Timeline switching, convoluted plots and dialogue that often made no sense. Season was pretty good until that idiotic episode.

I was very confused watching this episode. Not because I thought the plot was confusing, but because it was one of the worst examples of storytelling I've seen on screen. I thought I had either accidentally hit "restart episode" or they were doing some ridiculous time loop thing. Nope, they just want to hand hold the audience through EVERY characters' point of view just to make sure we can follow what's happening.

I wish the entire season was as solid as episode 6. Lots of moving pieces, lots of action. Only a few eye rolling scenes and plot based "teleportation". Vilgefortz finally putting his plan into place.

Too bad the rest of the season has been garbage.

Small bump here. I am 40 hours or so deep into The Wild Hunt. I haven't played the other games.

I see what tide06 is talking about. I have spent a good amount of time with each character in the game and that response was spot on.

And I did catch a comment Geralt made about Vilgefortz's plot and the sorceress with him (can't remember which one) said "oh, you want to bring that up now". I figured it was referring back to whatever happens moving forward with the series.

finally finished the last 4 episodes on plane rides the last two days.

i didn't hate it. but i didn't love it. the three leads are the only thing carrying it, and i feel like they do stick to the main plot points better than given credit by a lot.

the dialogue is the most painful. the amount of times they have Ciri say the F word badly in her solo episode in the desert sounded like the writers said "write a script from the CW where you can say the f word" to chatGPT. some of the other dialogue from elves, mages etc. during battle was also awful.

such a far cry from the first season. i still like it, but this is what happens when you let people who don't like the book write the script.

I'll order the books today as I'm in between readings. Thanks.

How I wish I had the ability to erase my memory so I could read them again as if I were doing it for the first time.
