Tom Cruise Eyeing ‘Days of Thunder’ Sequel

Tom Cruise is looking to make a sequel to another of his action classics, and it’s not one that you’d expect.
The actor is talking to Paramount about a follow-up to his 1990 NASCAR racing film Days of Thunder.
On its surface, the idea seems rather bold. Thunder wasn’t considered a box office hit upon its release (making $157 million globally with a production budget of $60 million), and the film received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics. But having revived and modernized 1984’s Top Gun with 2022’s blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, the actor believes he can work similar magic with his racing drama (which, like the original Top Gun, was a Paramount film
quote:
“He’s talking [to Paramount] about Top Gun and Days of Thunder,” says a studio insider familiar with the discussions. “It’s going to be what comes together first in terms of a script. It depends on the idea and, ultimately, the script.” (Cruise, sources say, has script approval over all of his projects).
Racing films have become rating fashionable lately, with the success of James Mangold’s 2019 picture Ford v Ferrari, Michael Mann’s less successful 2023 racing drama Ferrari, and next year’s F1 — which stars Brad Pitt and is directed by Maverick helmer Joseph Kosinski (who would seemingly be the ideal choice to helm Thunder, but one imagines he wouldn’t be too keen on making back-to-back racing movies).

A sequel in which he races against Ricky Bobby would be epic.

Was one of my favorite movies as a kid and I'd still watch the frick out of it.
I had sponsors in from all over the coast and I'm hugging, and holding hands, and praying for a good showin'. And what do we do? We end up looking like a monkey fricking a football out there. Everybody out, please.

Isn't NASCAR kinda dead in National popular culture?
Movie came out when NASCAR was "the next big thing" and it did grow huge in the 90s, escaping its regional popularity....now?
Fighter jets are always cool for sequels.
Overcrowded restrictor plates turning left? Not so cool anymore. The audience for this is looking in the rearview mirror and probably very limited tbh.

NASCAR got too busy alienating it's fanbase. No interest in this one.

Yes, not only that they went after their redneck fans and killed off the regional support it had.

I don’t question Cruise anymore. NASCAR is dying and they will give them the keys to anything he wants to promote it
Cruise does nothing half arse. We need Michael Rucker as well

Eh, I'd argue the movie helped it become "the next big thing". It got me into NASCAR. When it came out, not all races were shown live, or even in their entirety. That wouldn't happen for another 7 years.
The new Netflix series was well-received, and iRacing is developing a new console video game for next year, something that has been neglected for years. Also, ratings have trended up this year, and recent surveys have shown that Gen Z has more interest in NASCAR than F1, UFC, and the NHL.

If tweet fails to load, click here. Now is as good as ever to develop a sequel. I'm not saying it'll bump NASCAR to the popularity of the 90s and 2000s, but it certainly can't hurt them in capturing a new generation of race fans. Plus the original movie is on cable constantly, and it's Tom Cruise. People will be interested.

The original is my only movie appearance.
I was at a NASCAR race and they told the crowd they were filming a movie and instructed as to stand up and cheer at certain moments before the race while cameras rolled by. So I'm one of like 50,000 in the grandstands cheering my arse off! My big break in the biz and I got to work with one of the best, the Cruise man himself.
