quote:While your top 2 make complete sense considering their impact, Ted Lasso does not belong on the list.
No "All in the Family"?
No "M*A*S*H"?
Ted Lasso only at 48?
It’s a feel good comedy and enjoyable, but it’s not really a “great” show.

Seinfeld and Friends, but no MASH, Sanford and Son, and All in the Family.
Lol
Ftr, Friends was an absolutely horrible show.

Season 1 would be top 10
#1 in on my list, it was perfect....ive watched almost a dozen times and still find nuances.
The guys that directed should come back for season 5!!

quote:Lost definitely belongs on the list. It was a cultural phenomenon and was heavily responsible for the type of high quality television we’ve seen the last 20+ years. That type of production was normally relegated to movies and TV was an afterthought.quote:the first souple seasons maybe. it was pretty clear the writers had no fricking idea what they wanted to do with that show and it suffered badly.
Lost belongs on it
As to the dip in the storytelling for a moment, you can directly blame ABC and non-creative executives. They literally told Lindelof that they never wanted Lost to end, it was making so much money and they wanted to milk it for everything, no cares about quality. Lindelof had to tell them the show has to end at some point. Until an agreement was reached, the writers weren’t in full control. I actually thought it got back on track and cemented itself as a groundbreaker television show.

Freaks and Geeks is good, but it really isn't that good. It probably could've been but it's insane to have it at #18
Arguably the single greatest season of TV ever. Seek help. it is too low on the list if anything. And very rewatchable.

It's the Lady Bird of tv. There's nothing identifiably wrong with it, but everyone knows it doesn't deserve the all-time scores it has. The one thing Chris Chan's brother was right about

These should be in there:
Family Guy
Bluey
Amazing World of Gumball
Adventure Time
Community
Parks and Recreation
Teen Titans Go
Last Kingdom
No Cheers or Mash??

It's universally loved/cult classic. Don't know if I've ever talked to a person that didn't like it. Not that everyone says it's the greatest, but when you legit never hear someone say they didn't like it, it's a pretty good indicator that it was a great show.
Also just had tons of heart. Bill is an all time great character and had a great cast with obviously good writing. Very deserving to be on the list.

so a show you admit has a significant decrease in quality midway, and *may* have grounded itself and *maybe* stuck the landing (i dont think it did), one that was stretched thin by executives, deserves spot in the top 50 of all tv shows in a history of tv spanning close to 100 years?
We all have our favorites though. I was personally slighted that Fraiser wasnt on there :)

Yes, it’s cultural impact and influence on future television making as a whole squarely puts it in the top 50 shows of all time. Without Lost, we wouldn’t have near the quality of shows we have now. Executives were not really investing in TV at the time, it was considered a 2nd rate medium to movies. You had movie stars and TV stars, with movie stars scoffing at the idea of playing in television shows. Not that Lost had movie stars, but it demonstrated that TV could match or surpass the quality of movies. People are mentioning a lot of shows that likely never would have been made 20+ years ago until Lost came around.
You also tossed out a lot of maybe’s that I didn’t say. There was a rift between executives and creators that caused a temporary dip in quality that was rectified.
Just from Wiki since I’m being lazy right now, lol - l’ll cite more later:

Lost has regularly been ranked by critics as one of the greatest television series of all time.[4][5][6] The first season had an estimated average of 16 million viewers per episode on ABC.[7] During the sixth and final season, the show averaged over 11 million U.S. viewers per episode. Lost was the recipient of hundreds of industry award nominations throughout its run and won numerous of these awards, including the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series in 2005,[8] Best American Import at the British Academy Television Awards in 2005, the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama in 2006, and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

Just to add, since I continue to be lazy, this is list ranking from Google.

Lost is consistently ranked among the greatest television series of all time, notably appearing at #32 on Variety's top 100 list, #27 on the Writers Guild of America’s list, and #8 on IGN’s top 100 list. With an average IMDb rating of 8.5/10, it is revered for revolutionizing TV with serialized storytelling, complex character studies, and a unique "mystery box" format.

This is actually a great list
Heated Rivalry threw me for a second but I didn’t see it so I guess I can’t complain

First thought was the list is trash because the Simpsons ain't on it. That show is top 15, probably top 10.
Nothing from the era of I Love Lucy, which is always in anyone's top ten list. Or even a bit after that era.
Then to have a one off like BoB on there without putting a discrete season like True Detectives 1 on there is not consistent.
All adds up to a crap list, at best.

Shows currently airing get the benefit of not having the chance to have crappy seasons. Halfway through Game of Thrones it would have been the highest rated show ever, until it wasn't. Probably should have left on air shows off the list.
This idea and the comment you quoted were exactly what I was thinking. That's like saying a team that's ranked preseason #1 is already in the conversation with 2019 LSU.
HIMYM comes to mind. I loved it, until I hated it. I can't even watch early season episodes that I initially enjoyed because of how much the later seasons absolutely ruined the story and characters for me.
I do like the Pitt, but it might not even be Noah Wylie's best role as a doctor by the time it's over.
ETA:
House is another example. Great show until a terrible ending.

You shut your mouth. It deserves its spot for JA alone. Definitely a top show for teenage me.

For comedies, I know a lot of recency bias, but Sanford and Son as old school, Community, Arrested Development, Scrubs and Parks would definitely be on my list somewhere, and that’s no slight to the other great and acknowledged comedies, just personal preference.
I made the list off the top of my head. Sanford and Son was freaking hilarious. I love Scrubs, Park and Rec and Arrested Development are awesome as well.
Every couple of months I quote the great Fred Sanford.

No Arrested Development?
Rescue Me would be on my top 50 list for sure.
Another one I wouldn't have minded seeing on the list is 24. Maybe not a top 50, but it was such a unique and different show (24 hours).
