Is it music from a time period?
Is it music with a certain sound?
Is it music from certain people?

most will say it's a certain sound.

but judging by "classic rock" radio stations, it can also be anything under the rock umbrella more than like 20-25 years old.

Idk but it’s sucks that first Wave channel 33 on SiriusXM is called Classic Alternative.
And it plays all my favorite.

I suppose everyone will have their own opinion but for me it’s rock from the late 60s through mid 70s from bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath Ted Nugent. Emerson Lake & Palmer, Pink Floyd, The Who, Blue Oyster Cult, Heart, ZZ Top, Joe Walsh, Rush, Queen, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Yes, Deep Purple, Grand Funk Railroad, Uriah Heep, Bad Company, Wishbone Ash, Black Oak Arkansas, etc.

Mr Jones is 30 years old. Classic Rock?? I would say no … but younger folks may think music from the 90s fits the definition

I tend to put everything pre-grunge (including hair metal that came out after grunge became popular) as classic rock.

However, most people consider “classic rock” to be anything from before they started middle school.

I would define it as rock from the mid to ate sixties post initial British Invasion (when bands started spending more time in the studio) through the late seventies before punk and new wave. Many bands kind of existed before and/or after so they are somewhat grandfathered in, but that’s all to say it covered a time period that it was the dominant music of.

The radio obviously thinks of it more of a classic car, if it’s older than 25 years, it’s just another classic.

Depends on your age: for me 60s & 70s...I'm 63. Before 60s it's Oldies and after it's just older rock.....so in order:
Oldies
Classic
Older

yeah i always say 60s-70s.

then i remember the 70s included disco..

to me classic rock is a sound not a time frame.

yep.

When I was growing up I thought "classic rock" to be pretty much all rock from the 60s-80s. Stuff that we woudl all universally consider to be the genre. But lately if I'm browsing radio stations and land on classic rock sometimes I'll hear pearl jame or nirvana. At first it kinda irritated me but then I realized that that music would've come out 30 years ago so I guess tehcnically it is "classc".

For me personally though I'll always equate it with that 60-80s time period.

The term was created initially to define the 60s and 70s. I believe that term was popularized in the late 80s and especially through the 90's and 2000s and it meant to label the late 60s to 70s and some early 80s stuff started to sneak in.

So I think new terms should be created to include the 90s to 2000s rock to include the grunge and alternative.

I tend to agree with you, but I don't think I get a vote.

I'll use cars as an example.

a 1986 Taurus can be registered as a "Classic Car"

but that's not what people think of when you talk about Classics.

It's rock from back when whoever said it was young or that they heard their parents play in the car.
