I'm a teenager (so nothing expensive) and want a good bass guitar, was thinking about using money I have saved currently and Christmas money for one. I don't have a guitar so would a electric guitar do me better?

JMO, but I think you should get the 6 string first.
There are some great deals out there right now too.

Squire Classic Vibe

There's one at guitar center in Nola for $329 right now. Good shape minus missing the back plate.

Would have bought it from this boards advice, but was given a Les Paul.

If that's not in your budget, a Squier standard or the new sonic line seems solid. Anything you can learn on and inspires you to play is a positive.

I really like this Squier Paranormal Esquire.
It's a lot of guitar for the money IMO.

Hard to beat a Squire bass for your first until you have a feel for what you want in a bass guitar. You might consider a start kit like this one:

Ibanez also puts out a pretty decent product and also offer a starter kit. I've always found their look a bit uncool though.

I have an Ibanez Mikro, but get one made in Indonesia, not China. Awesome little bass.

Peavey makes some solid entry level bass offerings as does Yamaha. Getting a Squier is kind of the popular thing to do, and changing out the hardware to upgrade it later would be easy to do since they're so common. Much of what determines what kind of bass you should go after is dictated by the type of music you want to play. The world has enough guitar players. Go with the bass my friend.

the man comes here looking for bass advice and you're steering him towards a guitar?

OP: get a used fender mexican p bass or J bass and learn on that.

He asked, so I gave my opinion, otherwise I would have stayed out of his thread.

OP needs to decide if he wants to be a bass player or a guitarist then. you can be both of course but I know a lot of guitar players that think they are bass players and it's just not the same. can always tell when someone played guitar first and switched to bass.

the world needs more bass players!

A bassist who can sing will always have regular gigs. Something to consider.

The Squier Classic Vibe P is the best budget bass around. It’s really solid. I got one and put some Fender Vintage 63 pickups in it and put in a high mass bridge and it’s solid as hell. I’ll leave the Lakland and Geddy at home sometimes and play the Squier on a gig.

can confirm

I believe it was Roger Waters who said that the bass guitar was the easiest instrument to learn and the most challenging to master

of course it can also be said that you can be a raging egomaniacal a-hole and still work regularly for decades if you can play the bass (i.e., Roger Waters)

I'll echoplex the Squier Classic Vibe Series recommendation. Gig ready and value-packed straight outta the box.

Question for the OP: do you know how to play already, or are you getting a guitar in order to learn? If you don't know how to play, get a 6-string. Learn it and you will also be able to pick up playing bass very quickly if you choose to do so later. The corollary is not true - learning to play bass will not help you much in learning to play the 6-string.
