Blake Shelton- Austin
It’s been rendered completely obsolete since nobody has home phones and answering machines
But it’s perfect. A top 10 country song of the 21st century

But is that the right version? There are several and they aren't equally good.

Yes. The slow build up is brilliant. I also really like this version:
...pick it! Paul was Wilie's drummer.

Pancho and Lefty
He Stopped Loving Her Today
The Dance
Mommas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys
Me and Bobby McGhee (Kristoffersons version)
Just a few off the top of my head.

The Way I Am - Merle
Do You Believe Me Now - Verne Gosdin
I Can Still Make Cheyenne - George Strait
I’m Over you - Keith Whitley
Lost Highway - Hank Sr
That would be my top 5. Today.

I think a country music song has to tell a story, maybe laced with some sadness, play on irony, convey a sense of resilience - those type of things.
No illusions that it'll make anyone else's list, but it's a heckuva country music song.

Extremely underrated. If it were sang by someone more famous it’d be regarded as top 5 imo
