Canada banned Money for Nothing for a bit because of this. They reversed it later.

The EMF song Unbelievable has to hold the record for most f-bombs on mainstream radio. The mix in the background includes samples of Andrew Dice Clay, and one of the oft repeated lines is him saying "What the frick was that?"

You have to listen closely, but it actually loops something like "what the frick...dun tah dun...what the frick...dun tah dun...waaas that?"

You don't help people by protecting them from words.

IIRC, Tipper and company got owned by Frank Zappa and a few others who called them out on their bullshite and pointed out the hidden meanings of 50s lyrics in songs seen as wholesome (Wake Up Little Susie, etc).

As you likely know, a whole stanza from Dire Strait's "Money For Nothing" (references to Boy George with multiple uses of "faagot") has been missing from airplay for some time.

I thought because there is two versions of the song. The one that uses fagot is like an 8 minute song. the other version is the radio edit version. They even did that back in the 80's. There are a lot of rock song that have a radio edit.

I feel like an idiot for asking, but what does this refer to? I’ve always wondered.

I'm guessing the GunsnRoses song One in a Million would cause the current left wing puritans to go into convulsions

Great song, will never get wide airplay due to about four verses of a nine minute song.

There is (and was, back in the day) a radio edit version where he sings funky kicks going down in the city.

We used to listen intently at that point to find out which version they were playing. AOR stations usually played the original, Top 40s played the radio edit.

Remember when it was the religious right that insisted on editing and bleeping out "problematic" lines on screen and on the radio, and the left lost their fricking minds over it?

Not really. It was Tipper Gore and the wives of other democrat politicians that were pushing for censorship of song lyrics.

I remember doing the same with Devil Went Down to Georgia many years ago. There was a radio edit that said “I done told you once you son of a gun, I’m the best there’s ever been.”

You know what I always thought was funny? The Who’s “Who Are You”. Roger Daltrey clearly (albeit very fast) sings “Ah, who the frick are you”, and it never gets bleeped out. It’s almost like they managed to sneak one in.

Same with Fuel by Metallica, I've never heard this edited

Don’t forget brother Louie” by The Stories.
“She was black as the night.
Louie was whiter than white.”
Louie takes her to meet his parents and an argument follow. Surprised the song hadn’t been banned from 70’s satellite radio yet.
