It just seems so bizarre on Mirotic's part.

He could seriously get paid a lot more than 12 million for one year this offseason.

to me, it sounds very stupid to trade Asik and miminum contract to take back Mirotic as if he's an expiring contract and not keep him for next year. You'd be trading a 1st round pick for an extra $3M in salary savings. Seems like a pretty stupid deal if you ask me.

If that is actually the Pels position and not a negotiating tactic then ownership is making Demps tie one hand behind his back. Yeah it's possible that you trade for Mirotic, he gets injured and you won't be able to flip him to avoid the tax. If you're so anti-tax that you won't take a risk with a flippable player, just trade everyone now and become Orlando.

Exactly. And strange that Dell doesn't jump on that "value" of a guy on the roster that'd be under contract for less than his value. There's something else there and we don't yet know what.

$12.5M Guaranteed next season makes re-signing Boogie extremely difficult

No it doesn't.

This Boogie injury forces Demps to get up off his arse. Cousins will come back to a better team when he returns next season.

I feel like Mirotic could easily get 20mill+ on the open market. Kind of weird that he WANTS the option picked up. I would have assumed he didn't want it picked up.

Not much money out there.

If Mirotic walks at the end of the year, the Pelicans still save ~$11.3M clearing Asik's contract from the books, then the $3M would be saved the following year.

The debate would be on the value of giving up the first for Mirotic this year + cleared cap space. I agree that the Pelicans could do better with the first, so I'd rather not see Mirotic as a rental, but I'd also not want to pay him his market rate. The $12.5M is a bit high for us, but reasonable enough that we should be happy to guarantee the contract for one year.

I can’t help but wonder how awesome this would have been with boogie on the court...

WHY GOD? WHY???
if Boogie hadn’t gotten injured, they wouldn’t have targeted Niko.

But the $12.5 million is not much different from the Asik contract next year and Mirotic would be much easier to trade than Asik if needed.

That's not the $3m I'm taking about.
If you keep Asik, and stretch him, you save about $8m in salary. Trading for an expiring contract like mirotic, if we don't keep him, saved us $3-4m compared to stretching Asik. So your essentially trading a first to make the playoffs this year and save yourself $3-4m in salary next year. Stupid imo.

The Bulls are likely requesting more from the Pels in order for them to retain the option.

This is something I don't understand about the CBA and trades and guarantees. My understanding is that the Pelicans can guarantee the contract after the trade, so the Bulls really have no leverage to ask for more.

This might be a bad analogy, but I think of it like a car seller trying to ask for more money after agreeing to a deal because the car has an extended warranty option that would otherwise transfer with the car.

I may not be understanding the rules correctly here.

I was talking about in the event Mirotic got injured and became untradeable. That's the only thing I could think of as to why Mirotic's contract might be less preferable to Asik. But even then you could stretch Mirotic. $4.1 over 3 years is a better stretch than Asik's $2.85 over 5 and saves you $7 million off of what Asik's salary would have been. Again, the Pels position seems nonsensical. Occams razor says they're playing hardball.

Not true. Mirotic's name has been thrown around all season as a potential trade target. The Boogie injury just lit the fuse on talks

Probably because Mirotic has said he likes Rondo a lot. Said he was the best teammate he's ever had.
