Realistic paths to getting better in 2023-2024
Do nothing and have our current players stop missing so much time is pretty realistic. We were the #1 team in late December. A time where BI had missed half the games, Dyson had missed time, CJ had missed time, Trey had missed time and Larry had missed time.
If BI doesn't stay out for 2 months with a bruised toe this very season we're likely a 5 seed or better

Trade Zion for what you can get. Pray to lottery gods you hit on something. Go after Beal or Dame with your treasure of picks.

-Get more shooting
- replace Jonas, not because he doesn’t play well but because Willie clearly doesn’t like him or want to play him and get someone that Willie wants at the 5.
- Once Zion is back this becomes not as important with Trey coming off the bench but I think we need to trade Naji for another scorer that can get the bench a bucket
- stay healthy

Trey needs to start on this team and the longer we delay that the more he will resent this team and the longer road it will be for him to be an all star. there is no need for CJ to be getting more minutes than a 50/40/90 player who can jump out the gym
if we need a veteran offensive assistant coach (who may have previous experience as a head coach) to come in and give Willie the confidence to make that type of move, then that’s what needs to happen
pelicans were 15-5 in the regular season when Trey ATTEMPTED 12 or more shots. these are starter numbers

quote:yep. his absence in the 3rd quarter last night and the 4th quarter vs Minny when he was dominating proved that it was not a Jonas problem, it was a Willie problem.

Griff needs to take a look at making moves that save Willie from himself. if we’re not getting value out of players because the coach refuses to use them properly and he won’t adjust, the roster has to be changed. can’t just continue to sit back and let that happen

Untouchables: BI, Trey, Herb
Zion: Depending on what the real story is behind the scenes, you aren't trading him unless it is affecting the locker room. Unless we magically get a star for a star trade (ie Trae, Luka, Dame, etc) we can't trade our biggest asset for pennies on the dollar. We have to hope he's healthy (I know, I know) Next season is his final chance imo, team wise and for the fans.
CJ: I fully believe his injury affected every aspect of his play. He was literally resetting his splint after every shot he took. Get him fixed up and I think he can be the shooter he was. But I don't think he can be our PG from here on out. He works as a shooter, the facilitator part we can upgrade.
Jonas: We have to get someone that we trust late in games. Running offensive sets through Jonas is just not how I see us getting to the next level.
Everyone else is expendable to get what we need.
Needs:
True PG! If you are going to package all our assets and players to put an a star along side BI, Trey and Herb then it has to be a true scoring PG. Package what or who ever you want (even Zion or CJ) if it gets you someone that runs point on the offense and lets BI do what he does best. BI can't be the one dribbling the ball up in crunch time. Run plays for him to catch, pull up and shoot.
Shooters! Trey and BI can't be the only shooters I am confident the ball is going in every time it leaves their hand.
Also, we need an offensive coach that actually has a parking space at the facility

This is why positions are largely irrelevant.
Who is the PG for the Celtics, and are they a serious PG for a 2 seed? Same question for the Nuggets.
The game is just different now, and we just see other dudes who are bigs or not traditional PGs that control an offense and play the role of point guard.
Jokic on offense is just as much of a PG as any other position.
I can't tell if this post is agreeing with my statement about Morris or not, but your reasoning here is why I think Morris as a starting point guard doesn't really work for a very good team. His talent and what he brings to the team isn't worth starting him just to check the "point guard" box when we have more dynamic players that can be included in the starting 5.
Hence why I think CJ as the "point guard" but playing mostly off ball in sets with the starters or playing Herb there to beef up the defense is the move.
I certainly don't want to give up anything of real value to get Monte Morris- no offense to him, who I generally like as a player.

i would love to get FVV here.

IMO, you take BI, Trey, Herb, and CJ (after surgery) and you build around that... everyone else, including Zion, should be available to help upgrade the TEAM...

Front Court
Trade Jonas, 2023 1st, and another lightly protected 1st for Myles Turner. Maybe throw in Dyson.
Back court
We need scoring and creation. Free agents out there that might work: Jordan Clarkson, Malik Beasley, or gary trent... maybe FVV but only as a mle.
I'd match a cheap cheap term Jax contract. Why not.... bigs take time...if he is gonna hit its going to be on the next contract. But its a gamble and I know that I might be the last one on the bandwagon.

2 firsts + jonas is plenty for tuner. Not adding Dyson to that.
strong rumors FVV is signing with Orlando for big money this offseason. Gary Trent is klutch, idk if we ever kissed and made up with Rich Paul but I agree the fit is good.

He needs to play to get better, that ain’t gonna happen here.

I didnt finish my thought on including Dyson... id throw him in if they took back nance contract and gave us a shooter or Nembhard.

Is there a universe where this is the off-season where they take the big swing?
And by that I mean if they stay 14 or so in this years draft, something like JV, Dyson, filler and most of the draft war chest for Bridges and Claxton from BKN?
Not sure what other “big” swings there are out there this summer.

2) Jonas- the big fella has been a consummate professional here, but I think it’s run its course. We need a more mobile or rim protecting big to cover up some defensive deficiencies at other spots. I think it’s more likely than not that he’s traded.
This franchise has proven how slippery of a slope this mindset is. Jonas is a top 10 center in the NBA. To upgrade his lateral mobility, you are likely sacrificing his spacing, passing, and rebounding. Does Jonas have weak spots to his game? Yes, but so does every other center in the NBA.
Who do you propose as an upgrade?

CJ will be the guy likely dealt for the next big move, but not this offseason.

We have no chance to get him. Brooklyn would value him, rightfully so, at least equal to what we value Ingram.
He's not going anywhere.

5) Herb played well down the stretch and *should* be amendable to a nice extension this offseason that sets his family up for life while also providing the Pels a starter level player at below market cost as the cap moves upward. I don’t think he’s getting traded.
I'm optimistic Pels will go ahead & pay Herb his money this summer. I assume for 4 years at around $70M or so.
As for "Herb played well down the stretch"...Herb played 66 games this year. For the 1st 33 games, Herb shot 27.8% from the 3-pt line on 25-90. For the last 33 games of the season, he shot 40.3% from the 3-pt line on 31-77. Maybe it was just me, but I thought his shot just looked MUCH better, EVEN when it didn't go in, as the season went on.

Trade CJ and fire Griff! Trade CJ for future and/or a minimal returns in order to gain salary flexibility. Bring back everyone except Willy, Temple and Josh.
I would target the best shooting guard and power forward in the draft. The most important off season moves would be to terminate Griff and hire experience player development coaches.
The other move is to remove Zion's father from the equation. There should not be anymore piano playing. Take lessons from Sean Payton on how he dealt with Wilson. The team should only deal with the player and his representative
