I owe an apology to the Saints front office. While we were shitting all over Mickey (rightfully so at the time), he may have drafted another 2017 type class again.

Ranking 2025 NFL rookie classes:

quote:

The Saints' rookie class is headlined by second-round quarterback Tyler Shough, who ranked 21st with a 49.2 QBR in nine starts. That's not quite "the Saints are set for years" territory, but Shough has certainly earned the right to come back and try to improve as the starter. (Just remember that he's already 26 years old.) Shough's blind side was protected by first-round left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr., who started all 17 games. He ranked above average in run block win rate (75.6%), although he was below average in pass block win rate (87.7%). Then we go to the defensive side of the ball, where the Saints improved to a surprising 13th in defensive DVOA this season. In Ben Solak's All-Rookie team, he highlighted third-round pick Jonas Sanker as a premier communicator and coverage player who made plays from sideline to sideline. Fourth-rounder Quincy Riley, the team's third cornerback, was above average in my coverage DVOA metric and started five games. Another fourth-round pick, linebacker Danny Stutsman, didn't start any games but had 53 combined tackles. Next season, the Saints will also get back third-round defensive tackle Vernon Broughton, who suffered a season-ending hip injury in Week 2.

Anytime we have an amazing draft class it is never because of Mickey. Anytime we have a shitty one it is only because of Mickey.

To be consistent; I am pretty sure there were many people shitting on Loomis shortly after the 2017 draft too.

Don't recall the favorite pick, but many demanded White over Latt. Were they wanting Foster at this pick?

People were pissed when the team missed on Foster when they drafted Ram

If I recall correctly, AK was a reach

Analzone - was liked, but injury concerns - justified

Don't recall a lot of love for Hendrickson or Muhammad. But Muhammad was a 6th, so outside of drafting from favorite teams, this is pretty consistent.

If 2017 was Rueben Foster, yeah a shite ton of people lost their minds we didn't take him. xD

Kamara wasn't because of the reach factor, it's because we traded a 2018 2nd rounder and people were confused why you trade a 2nd for a 3rd.

Didn’t San Fran jump us for Foster and everyone was pissed off (likely myself included) then we drafted Ram as the fallback? I could be misremembering.

I believe they did jump us, but there was conflicting info out there about circumstances behind things.

But I was extremely grateful we didn't end up with him, whether we wanted him or not. People truly didn't understand how bad his off field was, nor how dangerous to his own health his style of play was. One way or another I said he wouldn't even last 3 years.

We traded a 2018 2nd for a 2017 3rd. Not really "up", but yeah that is why people lost their shite.

That's right. I just remember watching in a friend's bar and the overall reaction for the night. Could not recall the specifics.

Yeah, we definitely caught a break. For some reason I’m remembering Payton really wanted him and did the most Payton thing ever and told everyone that would listen.

That’s probably about when I stopped projecting NFL draft success. It’s a crapshoot for the professionals, let alone the general fan.

Adding Broughton next year is like getting another draft pick.. unless he got the Bo Jackson hip injury

This is where some reports are conflicting, and we get into the whole smokescreen thing. If you want someone THAT bad, why advertise it in such a way. If you aren't on the clock yet, why are you calling someone you want to pick.

Either Payton was extremely smart or extremely stupid about the whole thing. There is no middle ground.

Also, yeah you can do all the homework on these guys you want, but there is an infinite number of outside factors that come into play that will help a pick be more or less successful, starting with the team that drafts them, the coaching staff, other players on the team, etc before even getting into the off field stuff.

They didn't even mention Devin Neal in their blurb about our class - he looked pretty damn good when his number was called this year too.

I read somewhere Payton would’ve selected foster in that draft

Until it’s proven otherwise I’ll continue to believe Loomis only selects the people who select the players. That is a year round grinder 24-7 job. Mickey is not doing that crap.

I don't disagree, but like you said he hires/fires the staff who puts in the most work on it and the coaching staff, so even if you don't credit/fault Loomis directly for the drafts, he still has a hand in it.

I don't believe he is unattached to the evaluations and such, and does have input during the drafts (from everything I've heard it was always a team effort when making the choices), but no I don't believe he is doing the evaluations himself, so he can only go off of the staff he hired to do that job.

Pretty sure during one of the Payton year PC’s he said they all collaborate on the decision
