You can not sign Taylor to a top 2 or 3 Outside CB contract because he is not a top 2 or 3 outside CB.

The Saints have plenty of game tape to prove that, if left on an island too long he will cost you games. He's a top 5 nickel/slot CB that can play outside in a pinch. That I give him, but that is not worth top CB money and not financially smart to sign him just because you don't want to "let him get away".

Jalon Kilgore could fill his role day 1, or as some have suggested, drafting Downs at 8 and making him or Sanker your "star" slot would be and instant big upgrade.

IMO Taylor leaving the Saints was sealed last offseason when he tried to play hard ball with Khai Harley, and Khai didn't blink. Taylor may and likely will get paid a lot of money, but the Saints should be on the hook for over paying for him.

The one area the Saints have drafted well the last few years and we let them all leave instead of signing to a 2nd contract.

Malcolm Jenkins
Vonn Bell
Marcus Williams
Paulson Adebo
CGJ

Malcolm Jenkins hated Drew Brees. That's not gonna work.
CGJ was a cancer, look at how he has bounced after he left here.
Bell and Williams never matched their production here.
It's too early on Adebo, but he was nothing special this year.

So give up next years draft because Delane at 8 is silly.

That's a terrible way to look at it. We were 1 bad play away from ending up #13-#14. If we upgrade both offense/ defense for next year then we could be looking at #18+. To trade up from #18 to #11 is going to cost a minimum 2nd + 3rd.

And I hate when people say the word "give up" like you are losing the most valuable asset instead of gaining it. You don't "give up" next years first you quite literally get a better pick than next years first.

In this case it would give us +$15mil to spend elsewhere like DL.

If you can end up with:

#8 David Bailey
#11 Mansoor Delane
#42 WR/ BPA
#73 WR/ BPA

It’s a lot easier to replace safeties vs CB. they only let Adebo walk bc had a snapped leg

Keep Taylor within reason and draft an edge rusher(s) and offensive playmakers early. The only consistent pass rusher we have is Chase Young. Delane won’t matter if we can’t generate anything up front.

And he led the league in DPI the year before he snapped the leg and was close to leading the league the year he was injured while only playing 7 games.

He was also signed to a top 15 contract with NYG

If Taylor is looking for $18M+ a year. The Saints should put their best offer on the table, then let him test FA market and get that bag

Downs at 8 may be too enticing to pass up if we lose Taylor. He could walk right into that star role.

You had it, now you don't. It's just part of the equation. Not sure why it bothers you to use that language.

it sort of implies you lose a first round pick altogether. you only really give up the extra compensation to make up the value difference

There are too many holes to fill, we will have to spend in conjunction with the draft to fill them all. Can’t just throw a JAG at CB like you can with some other spots

Kool Aid and Taylor player nearly every defensive snap last season. Can’t imagine many CB duos logged 1000 snaps ea. Thankfully we didn’t have to get into any real depth there but that won’t be the case most seasons

If Taylor leaves you really need two guys there minimum

I thought Taylor played better as the year went on. There was definitely a learning curve for him with the new defense that Staley runs.

There were some games where he looked bad but it was just rather a good play call. I can remember he looked real bad on a touchdown that he gave up against the 49ers but it really wasn't on him. They just had a really good play called.

There are times that I'm frustrated with his tackling though.

Well if you can count on anything. It will be on M.Loomis over paying.

I think this is the problem.

What he is asking for is not reasonable. It wasn't reasonable last off season so he "had some injurie" to keep him out of the preseason and when Khai called his bluff he came to work. But IMO he was pissed and made his mind up then that he was hitting FA to get as much money as he could.

Some team will pay him more than he's worth, I just hope it's not the Saints.

I would not call one poster (Townedrunk) asking if Sanker can play the slot as getting blasted for that opinion. And his point was only the fact that Sanker has always played safety

Sanker is 210 lbs and has below average speed for a CB. He would have a bullesye on his back if an offense spreads the offense out. He graded out in the bottom third of safeties with regards to coverage
