Help me figure something out with these QBs

Considering the fact we still don't know who our starting QB is... would you say Shough is playing more like a 5th round QB or that Rattler is playing more like a 2nd round QB?
I don't think there is a scenario where you'd say both are playing at the expectations you have for where they were selected.

You had higher expectations? Why? I say play them both. Let 1 start each half and rotate each game.

I dont know how they are playing because preseason has become more useless by the year.
Players get shuffled around so much and many of those guys they were playing with will be working at enterprise in a few weeks.
All these definitive Shough and Rattler takes are kind useless. Probably won't know much about them until week 5.

Rattler is definitely playing above the normal 5th round selection.
Shough is right where you'd expect him to be. Remember, at this point last year Bo Nix was a mess. It wasn't till November that he put it together.

I think they are very close in what they have done so far. Statically they are very similar. The thing is you would have expected Rattler to distance himself from Shough because of the extra real game experience. Shough is still an unknown. I would think the coaches would be more prone to start Shough and see what you really have. If Shough is not the answer, then you know for sure what you're doing in the first round in the draft.

He hasn't won a single game as a starter, was benched once last year after starting 3 games, and has looked somewhat inconsistent in preseason. Aside from simply making the team, it's hard to say he's "definitely playing above the normal 5th round selection". He has moments of good play, then indecisive play that leads to little production. Sometimes within the same drive. Really, that is what's keeping Shough in the mix. Rattler's had a significant "head start" and can't pull away from Shough...a guy who, himself, was a questionable 2nd round pick.

Given that McCoy didn't play in the preseason, Penning missed most of it, our backup center went out on the first drive of the first game, and Ruiz always looks lost as shite without McCoy, neither guy got a fair shot to show what they can do when given time to make reads and set their feet. Both were scrambling for their lives nearly every play.
They both looked about round 3 level talent, but it will become more clear where they are at once the regular season starts.

I think it says a lot that Rattler with a full season of NFL football and a 2nd full off season and training camp in an NFL system cannot create a noticeable gap between himself and a rookie being exposed to his first NFL experience.
I really couldn't care less who get the starting job or where they were drafted. At least the Saints are not dealing with an Anthony Richardson type failure.

I think the health of the oline will determine who they start. Doubt they want to put their rookie behind a patch work oline with SF, @Sea & @Buff looming in weeks 2-4.
Maybe you see them put "the vet" in there the first month and see if he can establish himself. If not, then you bring in the rookie with the back-to-back home games against NYG & NE

Shoughs pick 6 was terrible but what else has he done to look like a 5th round pick? Has he looked like a stud, no but he looks like an actual QB with a good arm and looks good standing in the pocket. Gonna be a rough year regardless but other 5th round picks this year are getting sacked more than the amount of completions they have.

I don’t think Rattler will ever be a top NFL QB but he’s at least head and shoulders better than fricking Garrett Grayson, Ian Book and Jake Haener. Usually when we take QBs we just flush that pick down the toilet. Rattler could at least be good enough to be an actual backup which has value. The Vikings just flipped Sam Howell for a positive return.

QBs outside of the top 10 are usually crapshoots, and the further down in the draft, the less likely they are to pan out. Right now, he's playing like a non top 10 pick.
What you have to understand about drafting qbs is that qbs have the lowest median value of any pick, but the highest average value. Every QB pick is high risk/high reward. The few that pan out are extremely valuable, while most are junk that don't produce anything for you. However, the ones that do are so valuable, that they're worth investing those high picks in. The further away from the top 10 you get, the odds of hitting get even lower. Shough is a longshot to be an above average starter, but so is Rattler. One can argue about draft positioning, but Shough was a 2nd rounder in a weak QB class while Rattler was a 5th rounder in a strong QB class. I would say that they're fairly similar, and are nearly indistinguishable on the field.

Yes we do. Rattler is starting vs Arizona.
