I'm not taking offense. I think this trade is weird as hell.

I think your framing of it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Otherwise, it feels like an overpay to essentially give up a 1st, 2nd and 3rd round pick to get a 1st one year sooner. That is assuming we don't fall on our face and suck this year... imagine if we traded a top-10 pick next year plus the 2nd/3rd for a mid-1st round pick this year in a down draft. Ireland will need to work his magic.

Just view it as two separate trades.
Trade 1:
18, this year's 3rd to move up to 16 (fair trade)
Trade 2:
Next year's 1st(given decent health probably in the mid teens at worst), 2024 2nd(which would be viewed as closer to a 3rd value wise) for 19 and a 6th

Bunchie, this is exactly what wildtiger is saying

That isn't what happened though.

They moved up two spots in the draft, and then acquired another 1st round pick.

Its all a matter of language and framing. I don't see it as that reductive.

Only 1 trade happened today. You’re describing two different trades happening in sequence.

A lot of shite was swapped but at the end of the day we added 18 and gave them 19. That DID happen(among other things). That is not terribly material or valuable so it is fair to look at the rest of the trade without adding 18 and giving up 19.

You're saying we did 1 thing then did another, but that didn't happen. It all occurred at the same time.
I see no issue there when you're looking at the totality of what was added vs given up.

I'll put it this way, it's kinda the same reason why we're not looking at the 6th and 7th in the deal. They're rather immaterial.

I understand what you're saying.

You are attempting to say that they moved back a spot and gave up a bunch to do it, then acquired 16 using future picks. This gives it more of a negative connotation.

Language and framing are always intentional.

I can't believe I'm getting this far in the weeds over this

Saints traded a future 1st, future 2nd, this years 3rd and 7th, for number 16 in this years draft and a 6th round pick

Similar to what you did with 18 & 19, I'd even remove the 2 late round picks.

Gave up '22 3rd, '23 1st & 24 '2nd for the 16th pick. If you know who is sitting there, it may make sense; but just seems illogical now. With that said, all value charts I have seen show future picks drop a round. So they gave up a 2nd (2023 1st downgraded 1 round), 3rd (2022 pick) & 4th (2024 2nd downgraded 2 rounds) for the 16th pick. Again, need to know who is there to know if it's worth it

I mean I'm glad we have three picks in the top 50 in this draft but man-to-man I sure hope this doesn't backfire.

I can't turn off lawyer brain. Language is important.

That's really not what he's saying though lol.

Like the other guy said, it comes down to is 16 worth next year's 1st, and also a 2nd and a 3rd.

And in that trade, the Saints moved up two spots and acquired another 1st.

Your framing is that they moved back a spot and acquired a 1st.

While the end result is the same, your language and framing gives it more of a negative connotation, intentional or otherwise.

I love all the why's lol.

How about we draft Penning OT and JW WR?
Or someone freaks out and offers large for one of those picks.
Or we want one of the qbs and a tackle.
Or they just like messing with our minds.

Me I like the first one.

Yea, I botched it. My logic still stands, just swap the picks.

That swap is immaterial, just like the 6th and 7th are immaterial. So don't factor them, look at the rest of what was dealt.
