Giving up a 4th is crazy
Is it? Not like we have a great track record of using our 4th rounders. Hell I'd be in favor of trading it every year at this rate.

Why trade a 4th for an injured 28 year old WR when you’re not supposed to be good anyway?
He’s in the NFL. Sean got 500 yards out of him with a shite QB. They can always trade back and get a 4th round pick or better.

Nix is considered a pretty damn solid young qb and there are hundreds of guys that can give you 400 and something yards a season. That’s not a badge of honor.

Good move. Picks are not valuable when you draft:
Foskey
Saldiveri
Haener
Howden
Turner
Book
Ruiz

It’s not who we draft in the 4th, it’s comparing it to other players who have been traded for a 4th. A 7th round pick putting up 475 yards is now worth a 4th and 7th?
Obviously he has a huge contract but Deebo Samuel was traded for a 5th. Pickens a 3rd and 5th for a 6th.

But the contract is a major part of the value. The Saints are getting 3 more years of a near minimum contract for a player who has shown that he can contribute in the NFL already.

The 475 yards is probably as good or better than our number 1 and 2 receivers have recently put up.

Gave up: 2026 4th, 2027 7th
We paid MSRP, but I'm not upset about it. 7th rd nobody really cares about. Only looking at his 7th rd draft status just 1 year ago, then a 4th seems a slight overpay at first but if we would've drafted a WR in the 4th this year and he would put up 41rec/467yrd/3TD then we would all call that a great hit of a draft pick!
It fills a need, and sometimes you have to overpay slightly when you're in need. Also if the Saints knew/thought another team was trying to trade for Vele so they wanted to get out in front of the other team, or before Vele was a potential cut and believed a team ahead of us on the waiver wire would put a claim then I can appreciate the aggressiveness. It does however all come down to how he produces for us!
27yrs old doesn't bother me, especially since we have him on a cheap rookie contract for 3 seasons. Fans put way too much emphasis on second contracts. Obviously those are the goal and helps with your foundation & building blocks, but there are always new players to be had each year and various ways to acquire them. Teams need to get better and compete now, if they do not then they are not successful and that's why across the league you see coaches fired by the end of their 3rd season.
The only thing that I'm curious of is why is he being traded before the start of his 2nd season after having a very successful rookie campaign for a 7th rounder?
Is it just because of the rate of return on trade compensation? While it is a great ROI, him being on cheap rookie contract still surprises me.
Sounds like he missed 4 games from injury last year so hopefully Saints did their homework on that.
Do they just think Pat Bryant was that good to spend their 3rd round pick on even after Vele produced last year?

If he was any good Payton wouldn’t have traded him

He’s one of the best young receivers in the NFL when he plays. This board always let’s personal bias outweigh fact.

A fourth seems exceedingly steep for a cut candidate.

Would you trade Stutzman or Riley for Vele right now? If the answer is no, you don't make this trade.

That's relative to each teams roster at the position.
Again I'm say "IF" Denver thinks Vele was good, but felt a bit redundant with other guys of similar size in Courtland Sutton, Troy Franklin, Cam Bryant that they feel are just better and ahead of Vele then this might have been the going rate. They also have Joaquin Davis and AT Perry that are of similar size, but are not as good as Vele so they wouldn't fetch the trade compensation, but feel with the starting 3 that the drop off from Vele to Davis & Perry isn't that big of deal considering what they don't plan on any of them having much playing time

This was a good way to address a trouble area now. It may not be perfect but will be pretty good if it goes well. The 1 and 2 receivers are not proven commodities yet either. Hypothetical scenarios are not worth wasting time considering.

Vele and Velus on the field together was the plan. Now if we can just find Verus.

Broncos have big TE that is respectable pass catcher. Factor that into your hypothetical bs analysis as well please.

We didn’t give up much more and could have had Pickens. He’s a head case but has #1 receiver talent. And he’s only 24. Olave, Pickens, and Shaheed would be a nice young well rounded receiver corps.
Cowboys should be better so their pick won’t be much higher than our 4th.

Considering that Loomis would likely not pick well with those picks, this was a great deal.
