According to NFLPA, Saints had $7,561,613 in salary-cap space entering today. Bridgewater's hit is $5 million. Cuts on Saturday could cause some fluctuation

What I was thinking.
I honestly haven't kept up with him much but he looked pretty damn good in the video above.

Absolutely love the trade.
Does anyone know if we poked around him in free agency?
Probably went to jets for chance to start?
He is going to love it here.

I’ve seen enough third round draft picks, first round QB busts and NFL football to know that if you can get a good NFL QB for a third round pick, you take that deal every time.
This is a good move for the franchise.
This is a good move for the franchise.

For the Saints I think it's a good move too though.
They essentially allowed somebody else to test out Teddy in (kinda) live circumstance, then trade to get him over.
The 'why didn't they sign him as a free agent a few months ago?' crowd - they didn't know he was legit 100% yet
quote:
This goes 1 of 3 ways for the Saints:
*Nick Foles-style insurance plan for 2018 if Brees goes down.
*Brees plays every game, the Saints let Teddy walk, they maybe recoup the draft capital in a compensatory pick.
*Brees plays, looks on the way out, the Saints have succession plan
quote:
They then control Teddy's future - could potentially franchise if they move on from Brees or work on signing him long-term to a Case Keenum-style deal as the year goes on.
quote:
Brees' contract has stressed the Saints succession plans for years now - for the first time in a while they have a potential succession option as well as a one-year insurance policy for a team that expects to be contending this January.

i think the 2018-19 insurance policy is worth the 3rd. tom savage is horrible and the league would figure out taysom hill real quick...
this very well may be drew's last year.
saints were 1st in the league in DVOA last year, and should be no worse this year based on talent on the field. the super bowl is there for the taking, and a legit backup QB could easily swing the season

Btw, the Vikings gave up a 1st and 2nd for 1 year of always injured Sam Bradford

I think he can be a pretty good quarterback in this league. Probably not great, but I’ll take pretty good.

If he wins one more SB...he's done.
If not this year, he will finish out his contract and then call it quits.

the take on bridgewater is that he needs:
1) a good OL
2) a good QB coach with a creative scheme (ie: not just 3rd & long passing)
it would appear that if TB wants to, he can find a really good home with the saints

Highly unlikely we get a comp pick if he walks since we have no early draft capital. We will end up having to buy FAs and it will wash.

i still like to see JT Barrett develop into maybe our backup of the future as well.

I’m wondering what Payton thought about him during the draft then.
Ultimately, I think TB can be successful here but I think he will always need Payton or a good offensive coach with him along with a good OL. He’s not an Andrew Luck/Peyton Manning. But we don’t need him to be. He just needs to be Alex Smith level good. From there we can continue to build a hellacious D like the Jaguars. We already have significant pieces towards accomplishing that goal.

recall that TB's draft stock fell for just those reasons...that he would have to be a "system" QB. whether the saints would have taken him at 27 we will never know unless payton says something about it, which he very well might
as it was they traded up to get to 20 and took cooks

we also got a 6th back, could be a gem. You never know
