5 points has gotten really bad over the years, they do have some nice restaurants. The bars and clubs that moved in over the years you could tell the area was going this way.

It’s not the first incident that has happened around Hush. It and Sleek need to be shut down. They are hot beds for violence in 5 points and have really helped ruin the area for the good things that are over there.

That’s intriguing. I wonder what citizens moved out of the city and what citizens stayed. Might reveal something about why crime remained the same and didn’t follow the citizens that left to wherever they went.
Well, I use the term “productive” to define citizen types. Unproductive citizens are takers while productive types tend toward giving. From the tax base to volunteering, productive citizens give.
Unproductive citizens range from those living off the government dole to those who commit crime and take from citizens. Either way they TAKE.
Birmingham and other urban area have been suffering from a net loss of productive citizens for decades.

Birmingham has turned to shite. Democrat run. Democrat destroyed.
Long since been that way. Total credit to citizens of Homewood, Mtn. Brook, etc for having the vision in the 60s and 70s to incorporate and have its own PD that responds immediately to urban riff raff.
The US would be much better off if all urban areas had Balkanized similarly.

Looked at the Instagram. Not what I was thinking of when I thought hookah lounge. Looks like a club like Bella Noche.

On Facebook page "Birmingham Anonymous" there is graphic video of the aftermath in comments. Disturbing stuff so don't click on it if not able to deal with that kind of stuff.

People talk about south side changing as if this is a relatively recent thing. Let me give you some perspective of what South Side used to be like. When I was hitting that age around 95 or 96 where I was able to go to clubs, 20th street leading into South Side would be packed bumper to bumper both directions. Massive crowds were everywhere frequenting the usual spots. It was normal for it to take 20 minutes or so just to drive up the hill to the fountain. Around 98 or 99 it changed. The crowds that once filled the area were gone, the vehicle traffic disappeared and the clubs had begun shifting towards a more urban demographic. It’s never been the same and as long as it continues to cater towards those demographics it will never be safe… a very well known club owner in bham told me never get into the club business because you have a six month window to make money as the hot new place that attracts the money patrons. Once a new place opens across the street your money leaves with it. Once the urban demographic moves in, everyone is fricked.

Pretty much. Lakeview is about 5-6 years behind 5 points path. I think they are trying a little harder to correct that trajectory, but they are heading the same direction.

Lakeview is where they tried unsuccessfully to recapture the vibe of old south side. Once you lose your crowd it’s next to impossible to get them back especially if the underlying opinion is bham is unsafe.

Go back to the 80s. Five points was the main entertainment district. Restaurants, bars, etc. The slow decline has been sad to see. Lakeview, Avondale and now downtown have taken over. I wonder whether they will follow the same path. The city could prevent most of this if only it had leaders who cared.

Idk. I think all the good parts of Birmingham St George’d themselves many years ago. You cross the street and you’re technically in a different city
Ain’t no one living BHM proper but the community, Gen Z morons, and limousine liberals who can afford a gated secure mansion.

I watched it. Lots of members of the community involved. Looks like something from Somalia not Birmingham. Ridiculous

Birmingham (not including the suburbs) is kind of like Somalia tbh

Asked if the area was a trouble spot, Fitzgerald said, it “is known to our officers as a spot where people congregate because there are local businesses nearby that they patronize.”
Then it’s a huge trouble spot. He knows it, the rest of the department know it, but they don’t do anything about it, probably due to political pressure or fear of bad optics.
During the day it might be a good area, but at night it I guarantee it turns into a different scene. The actual patrons aren’t usually the problem. It’s the people congregating that turn it into a literal street party.

It is owned by a cop. So yes, they are acutely aware of the issue

While not directly in Five Points, but right near it at UAB, I was waiting in my FIL's truck to drive it home for him. Maybe about 6 months ago. It was probably around midnight and I was just outside one of the parking decks waiting on my wife to take her to her vehicle in a different deck. There were so many damn people walking and lurking around a gas station nearby. I felt really uneasy and exposed sitting there for maybe 10 minutes waiting for her. I just knew I was going to either be targeted or catch a stray as an innocent bystander. Right next to the only exit available (all others are locked after like 9pm) at the biggest hospital in the state.

My wife is from Birmingham and we stayed in a hotel in the area last time we visited my MIL. Her house was full that time and we wanted our own space.
There were tons of homeless people but it seemed ok during the day. It was pretty sketchy at night. Lots of revving Chargers off in the distance.
ETA - there was a black dude obviously strung out on drugs pissing in the fountain in broad daylight in front of my wife and daughter. We probably won't stay there again.
