What they be for tho?
Serious?

Communications. Internet, phones. They've been laying undersea cables since the 1800s for telegraphs.

Fun fact, the Russian navy is working on the capability of cutting undersea cables. Unclear how effective they would be.

Interesting reading if you look up the history of laying the first transatlantic cables.

We tapped into the USSR ‘s undersea cables off Kamchatka for a long time. They were marked with a regular Do Not Dredge sign.

And if you want a hot stock tip... the building they all terminate in, and all the termination and cross connects are owned by a little-known publicly traded company called Equinix, ticker symbol EQIX. Look up "MAE EAST" for further reading.
SpaceX with their Starlink program are going to negatively affect Equinix at some point in the future. Samsung, too, as satellite based Internet services will dominate.

Interesting. I wish they’d lay something better than dial up Internet to my rural Texas neighborhood.

The first transatlantic cables were placed under the Atlantic during the 1850s and 60s for the telegraph.

You’re telling me there are actual, physical “internet cables” spanning the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean? And all over the world?

Because consider me fricking shocked if so..

Don't the Russians try and cut these with there subs? I believe I read that's the kind of shithousery they partake in. Outside of fixing US presidential elections and throwing people out windows.

Why is there none in the gulf

my somewhat educated guess is because of oil and gas pipelines that run all through the gulf.

Because the gulf, by definition, is surrounded by land so there is no need to run cables under water to cross it. It’s much cheaper to run them over land.

That'll be especially cool when there's an under sea earthquake that makes it collapse.
