Unfortunately, you have a duty to secure the area ie. with tarps etc to prevent further damage. Always thought that was the dumbest thing. How is some 80 yr old woman going to hop on her roof and tarp it?

I've been in your shoes twice mang, and it sucks but ya'll will get through it

Sounds like you got the process started already. Happened to me 3 years ago, large tree through the roof of MBR. 1st thing we did was call insurance company, 2nd thing call tree service, who was there later that day to remove the tree so we could tarp the roof. Start moving stuff if it is safe out of the area. So sorry this happened to you and many prayers in the days to come. Dealing with this is not fun but, glad you and the family are safe. Oh and tons of pictures of the damage and the items in the room before you throw them out. Also, start making a list of the contents of those rooms and if possible locate receipts for valuation. Insurance will try to short you replacement value if you can't prove it. They will use standard prices for a mattress when you might have an expensive temperpedic (for example).

order a storage POD delivered to your yard today. Moving stuff out of the house and set into storage on site helps you handle one time... and is secure and Dry

Get a good contractor that you trust and is very familiar with xactimate. Have them get you paid for everything you can. Maybe hire an independent adjuster to write the xactimate estimate for you. Don’t turn it over to a catastrophe/ mitigation company. Those guys are crooks

Salmon, sorry for what your family is going through but at least you have family nearby.

My mom lives in Waskom and I just read they had 120mph winds last night. She had an old Live Oak on the west side of her house that she had cut down less than a year ago thank God, or we would be going through the same thing with her house.

A tree just destroyed my house

I just saw your FB post.

You know we are only about 4 blocks apart. It looks like a bomb went off at my place, but the house is fine. With all the trees down and power poles snapped in half, I don't see how we get power back for a few days.

Sorry this happened to you. I'd offer my place if I had power to at least come get cool and get something to eat. It's already miserable here too though.

Take prudent action asap to protect your stuff without putting yourself at risk.

This! Take photos...lots.

Go ahead and get the tree removed and tarps put up. Clean up as much as possible. If you have absolutely ruined carpet, pull it up. YOu don't want mold to set it. Clean up the water. If you have things that can be washed and salvaged, sort them so that you can wash or send to a friend's for them to wash. Call and get your claim in ASAP! There are a lot of claims and it may take a while for the adjuster to get to you.

Lots of folks here have been through similar things. I had 3 pipes burst in Houston in the Tx Freeze Feb 2021. Others have hurricane losses. The good thing about this is it's wind and should be covered. Document everything. Keep every receipt. Take pictures of every personal item that's a loss (tree fall on furniture?) because you will have to list it all out.

It will be ok. You and your family are ok!!!

Read the policy and get all out of pocket , evacuation, etc costs covered. Many people miss things in the confusion of a disaster. Prayers for you. God bless.

I haven't read thru everyone's responses but from someone who has had their house flooded my recommendation is that after the shock goes away DON'T let frustration take over. By that I mean, when your insurance tells you to inventory everything, they mean each item separately. They don't want 20 pr of jeans, they want you to list each pair. Don't just throw stuff away, make sure you take lots of pictures of the home and of the items. Go ahead and find a place to live, a place for climate controlled storage and rent a container to throw away stuff.
If you start having issues with your insurance and get an attorney then all of your files goes to the bottom of the pile as they will let attorneys fight and unfortunately sometimes that is what they want, once again as stated above DON'T get frustrated.
Its going to be a long, tumultuous journey but you can handle it and redo your home to whatever you want it to be now.
