For those interested, there is a fascinating show on YouTube with cameramen that follow the air ambulance in the UK. No dramatization, just real life medical emergencies: Air Ambulance ER
Unreal what they go through on a regular basis. The show depicts both good and bad outcomes. They are probably busier than the average US metropolis being that they are operating out where hospitals are sometimes 45 minutes away.

The spin you thing on top controls the up and down, forward and back and the spin you thing on the tail keeps it from becoming a giant top.

Is it true that most insurance doesn't cover airlift?
Seems like I heard of patients getting $25k+ bill after airlift.
I'd do it in a minute to survive obviously, but why wouldn't this be covered in such extreme circumstances?
You have to tell them you are paying cash when they get there

Both parents abut a year and half apart from the local hospital to Madison.
I want to say it was around $16k each but may have been $26k. It was a few years ago.

My brother got gutted at a shite hole bar in North Alabama trying to breakup a fight. He'd been dead if they had arrived 10 minutes later.

"It's not about your importance, but about the necessity. They do this when the patient is away from a hospital, and the injuries are severe. I have seen the ambulance helicopters in Norway very often. They use them extensively because of the fjords and because the people go climbing like every day. I've also heard that some hospitals use airplanes like these LINK to deliver a very sick patient to another hospital for treatment. I don't know the particular cases when it happens and what injuries you have to get in one of these.

I know a guy who was airlifted from a rural hospital, to a trauma center 2 hours away by ambulance. Bill was $55,000, and he was pissed. Reason; he was drunk and put a knife though his hand, taking out the seed of an Avocado; like completely though the center of his hand, and hit the palmar arch arteries. Blood was shooting out both sides of his hand, and they had to put a Blood pressure cuff on to stop it. Had to ship to a hand surgeon as they had to cut off the arterial flow to his hand, and the clock was ticking. Instead of being great full for saving his hand, he came back to cuss out the physician at the outlying hospital about the bill for medflight…Don’t ask how I know all the facts here, but flying is expensive. Also, another thing he was pissed about, was his wife beat him to the trauma center, as she left when they knew they were flying him out, and he had to wait for the helicopter to fly there, assess, then fly him out….

MASA will cover airlift for life.

A lot of medevac companies sell memberships that cover a flight if you need it. But they're rarely reciprocal and if another company flies you you're SOL.

Usually the most critically injured at the scene. Or unpredictability of the traffic for an ambulance. Worked in WBR parish on hwy 1 and most times we called an ambulance the chopper showed as well.

I've known a couple of people that had to be "life flighted". Both were catastrophic ski accidents (hit by another skier). The 15 min ride cost them (their insurance) about $40k.

I believe Madison Parish residents are fully covered if they need a medivac copter. You can purchase a life flight policy that is separate from your health insurance. If you travel a good bit or go to remote places, it could be worth it.

Ask the ER nurse for a rewards card. After 9 visits to the ER, the 10th visit is by helicopter.
