As has been said, definitely not uniquely American, but we have a lot of it due to the building boom after WWI. Unfortunately, the style basically died with the Great Depression.
Personally, it's my favorite style. Though depending on the application, I do love art nouveau. But the several decade period from the late 1800's to the early 1900's produced my favorite architecture and design pieces of the "modern" era.

You have stumbled upon the inescapable theme that underlies everything in our current society: who gets paid and why?
We could easily build glass buildings that blow your mind in Baton Rouge. But that means the people who do things would have to get paid and the baws who talk about things would come up short.
Our society is currently upside down world. Payment is rendered on time in full to those who contribute the least. Lotta times you gotta sue people for payment if you make things.

What the hell does any of this mean?
Developers get paid now, just like they did 100 years ago. You think politicians didn't get their cut back then too?

The Louisiana capitol campus in Baton Rouge looks awesome. We get a lot of things wrong but those buildings, especially the capitol itself, are gorgeous.

Developers don’t install and wire photovoltaic glass that not only changes color but produces electricity. Developers used to live in communities. My grandfather built False River Country club and over 400 houses in this area. If he didn’t pay workers he didn’t have workers and he got his a$$ beat in town.

Well yeah but that doesn’t explain why the Baton Rouge downtown Library or the new LSU Business Education Complex have such a hideous designs when there are examples of excellent, inspiring architecture within walking distance from both of them.
Why the hell would anyone make something so ugly and soulless?
And yeah even the little stuff today like fast food restaurants feel sterile and cold. Those designs reflect societies values. People are cold and distant today with far less optimism for the future, and their home and business designs reflect that.
Even the cars people drive today reflect a society that is more bitter and less fun. We see far fewer fun little sports cars and way more SUVs that all look like pissed off kitchen appliances

Lakefront airport in New Orleans is an excellent example. They did an incredible job restoring it to it's former glory

I couldn't agree more.
Churches too. What's with all the gray-on-gray-on-gray?

We used to build for Gods and Kings. Now we build based on the cheapest contract

I was driving around Louisville one day and ran up on the old water works building for the city that was built in 1858. It’s not Art Deco but still it shows the pride in craftsmanship people used to have. This was just an old water tower.

Birmingham recently allowed this building to be torn down for this.

Yeah, sure. That’s what the controllers want you to think!

We spend money on regulations and legalism, and build to brutalist standards.

If you ever in the area and into art deco and architecture, tour downtown Tulsa, OK. It will be worth your time. The buildings downtown there are beautiful remnants of a time long gone. There's an art deco museum too:

I lived temporarily in the Mayo Hotel. It's a beautiful example of a bldg when Tulsa was the oil capital. There are elaborate tunnels underground that connect a lot of the bldgs downtown. The tour covers the tunnels as well as the architecture.
I don't think we could build buildings like these old relics, with their detail deco, today. For one, the costs would be too high. Secondly, I don't think craftsmen are as skilled to do it these days.

Personally I’m a big fan of the American strip mall style of architecture and hope it’s here to stay.

Modern man builds to brutalist standards because he has lost his soul. We have become so mind identified that we have lost the ability see anything other than bland functionality. This demoralization is the true purpose of modern "architecture".
