Would it have to do with dumping fuel? I do know they can't land with that much weight, so if it was something they could still fly with, maybe just burn the fuel naturally and land at the closest and safest airport?

Maybe they don’t need an immediate landing and need to burn fuel before landing.

The max landing weight of the e145 is only 6000 lbs less than the MTOW. So yeah, no problem landing heavy in an emergency.
According to flifo it is a maintenance issue and looks like a tail swap for the flight from GRI to DFW.

Do we know what actually happened?
Seven hours late to depart, I'm guessing a mechanical issue that they thought was fixed during the 7 hour plus delay, but upon takeoff, it was realized that it wasn't actually fixed (or some other problem occurred)?
