Not necessarily a bad thing.
Both my daughters were all about getting their license.
My son is kind of meh about it. “I have my 4wheeler”

I haven't the slightest idea who Gen X, or Gen Z, or millennials are. I also don't know what my birthday sign or whatever you call it is.
People who like to use the terms Gen Z or millennial might as well be writers of some 90's teeny bopper magazine to me.

The teenagers in our family are getting their licenses. They're just struggling to afford to get a car and keep car insurance on it.

^THIS^
From 15-19 yrs old, I had so much sex in my car that it was almost awkward to finally bang it out on the bed.
I knew every private little nook and cranny spot to go parking throughout Tangipahoa Parish.

They can’t afford the cars, they can’t afford the insurance, the jobs available to them are not worth the costs, they can’t afford to go anywhere, they don’t have to leave the house to chat with their friends, ride share apps are ubiquitous, a DUI ir car accident is literally a life ruiner, parents have their kids lo-jacked at all times so they don’t really have any means of privacy or escape.
It sucks being alone all the time, but I would much rather be alone at home than most places I could afford to go.

I’m going through this right now with my 15 y/o. For one when I was growing up there was nothing to do in the car other than talk and observe what was going on around us. Fast forward to the first week my daughter had her learners permit, we were on a road that we take every day to drop her off at school and she didn’t know where she was at or where the road went. It kind of hit me, she was always on her phone when we were driving. This was her first time to actually pay attention to where she was.
I think that is the biggest issue, they are almost detached from reality by having there heads buried in their phones all the damn time.
This here, its partially our fault. Live in the City, but we've meet kids who don't know how to get anywhere they can't walk to since the moment they get in a car no one is paying attention.

Are you equating Generation names to astrological signs?
LOL.

Maybe stop shoving a screen in front of his face every time there is more than 12 seconds of down time. Kid has probably never looked out the window while riding in the car.

Stupid
In Louisiana in the early 80's you recieved your permit at 14 and DL at 15
In the 2000's it was 15 and 16 respectively.
I remember having my permit, like 6 month from turning 16, and my dad got me a car and I put my golf clubs in it and drove it to the golf course by myself that day.

We were not wealthy, but thankfully my parents bought my car & insurance. I was a full time student and had a full time job from the age of 15.

Same. They bought my Aunt's '92 Escort Wagon off of her for a thousand bucks. And I paid for my insurance through my job.
It's astronomically more expensive for both today.

WTF does this even mean?? Every restaurant, Cinema Theater are all hiring. I loved every minute of working at those places. i also learned how to be one hell of a cook from those jobs. My advice would be find which restaurant that is the hot spot where all of your friends hang out at - get a job there,.

The additional job opportunities a car would open up for them do not pay enough money to afford the vehicle, gas, and insurance required to get there.

I never had to drive Rosy Palmer or Fistina Pullitte anywhere.

I haven’t read through all the replies, but I think back in the 80’s, when I was getting my license it meant freedom/independence.
With (beating a dead horse) the onset of social media the want to break away is only an app/scroll away.
Freedom/independence hasn’t changed
But it’s guises have.

Hell yea. I drove to school everyday at 15 and we got caught in desegregation and had to go from Coursey/Sherwood to Lee High.

With at least two teenage girls I know, it's due to anxiety. Direct quote from one of them, "I drive fine, I just don't like it when there are other cars are on the road."
As long as parents keep taxiing them around, and their peers, moms and weak dads let the anxiety train continue, why would anything change?
