Much of Gen Z views any time they're required to spend looking away from a screen as opportunity cost. They can't (aren't supposed to) swipe and scroll while driving. They're very different from the previous generations. We can't wrap our heads around it but we weren't handed a tablet at age 3 either.

Are you really that naive to think that 16 year olds are not getting their drivers licenses

I’ve taught at a high school for 11 years. In that time, our parking lot has emptied out more, and in talking to the kids, they have less desire to get a car.

It sounds like parents are not making their kids get jobs. Otherwise they would want a license so they could drive to work.

16 year olds not driving should bring down everyone else’s insurance rates…

Cost is a big part of this.

Yes, some kids just don’t want to as well. My oldest was 16 before she was interested.

On the other hand, my just turned 15 year old is chomping at the bit and is doing drivers Ed this summer and every weekend asks me to take her to practice driving in parking lots

It costs me $200 every 6 months when I was added to my patents policy.

It costs $900 every 6 months for my kid now

30 ish years apart. 5.14 percent inflation rate. Prob higher if I had a son.

Would save me $500 a month on insurance if my 16 year old didn’t drive

In the summer of 1980 my Dad and I lived in Vinton. I turned 15 in August but I had been driving for over a year in Atlanta so when we went to Vinton I continued to do so. I had a full beard for almost 2 years and the drinking age in Georgia and Louisiana was 18 at the time. I had a load of friends in the bed of my truck at a convenience store in Vinton and when I walked out with 2- 12 packs a cop was sitting next to my truck. I am 14 at the time without a license of any sort LOL. Cops window was down when I walked in front of his car and he said "y'all be careful" LOL. That was it. I just knew we were going to Angola even though I did not know Angola existed at the time. That was a very fun summer. We almost moved to the area permanently. I was in hawg heaven....we had a 12 foot jon boat and 9.9 evinrude and I had free reign to do about anything I wanted. Me and a family of 4 boys from North Alabama had a BLAST that summer....and some local girls. Even in the moment I knew it was special....so much for youth being wasted on young people...for those 3 months I fully appreciated my lot in life....
I read this as a Kid Rock video.

It took mine until 16 to be ready to take drivers Ed and she drove with us for more than 6 months and took her driving test on her 17th bday. Like others mentioned she has constant access to friends and isn't isolated badly enough to have the same motivation we all had. I take some of the blame because we constantly harp on how crazy people drive and the cost of auto insurance in LA. I ride with her every once in a while these days and its SHOCKING how often people tailgate and drive aggressively when shes just doing her best to stay at the speed limit. She got honked at once with me in the car and I got out and had a word with the classy gentleman who tried to rush a newly permitted driver to take a left turn across traffic into the school drop off line, no less. It's been a good personal reminder to be patient and a shock at how terrible people drive.

She has a car, doesn’t have to pay for gas and insurance.

I learned to drive in the Cortana Mall parking lot way back when the mall was closed on Sundays
Dad said "have at it, but if you hit a light pole it's coming out of your allowance"
We grew up so much faster back then
Hell, I was having sex at 11 and with another person at 16
Drinking age was 18 but we were regulars in bars at 16
and when I was 20 I owned a bar.
Kids today need to lay off the soy milk

It was such a big deal in 1980s, that parents would check you out of school to go and take the test.

it was so much cheaper to get in a car when I was 16 than now. I feel bad for parents and kids.

I’m 30. Not a single kid I knew growing up worked a job during the school year, and hardly any of them had a summer job

I remember when people lined up as soon as they turned 15 to get their drivers license.

That's back when people got out and socialized.
