7 Brew is very expensive to start up.
Average $1.5 million. It’s a money machine in some areas. I looked into the prospect of opening one in Lafayette. The costs turned me off.

I used to live next door to a guy that was a franchisee and owned a couple of Burger King places. He seemed to do pretty well.

I worked for a guy who owned a hearing aid franchise. You wouldn’t believe the old people who wouldn’t pay off their hearing aids. I’d wait for them outside churches on Sunday and repossess them in the parking lot.

Mostly I just love how they have unique things. Went to one a while back on a vacation out west and they had some kind of beef soup. Delicious on a cold day

Worked at subways for multiple years. There's a reason they are relatively cheap to buy into.

This ^. Applies to many other fast food franchises too (but not CFA)

How so? CFA “owners” are more or less just managers….most can only own one, and most make only about $200k. Not bad money, but an incredible amount of time/responsibility.

I'm a spatula city franchisee. Business was great in the 80's but a little slow now.

I've spent a little time in the CFA corporate office.

Their entire franchisee model is wildly different from McDs or others.

You're right, most can only own one, at most two. They're also not transferable. So, you as the owner cannot sell it to someone else. They go back to CFA's corporate holding division, and then they sell it (for only like 20k) to the next guy that they thoroughly vet. They don't want absentee owners. You're expected to run thr thing, and you're responsible for your own marketing.

Sometimes franchisees in a market will join together and pool their resources for marketing and ad buys, ans sometimes (most of the time), they won't. That's why most CFA coupons are non-transferrable. They're valid for a specific location only.

They're a license to print money, but CFA is also looking for someone who has deep ties to the community, and has a long track record of being a somebody in that town. I knew a woman who was in corporate marketing who had worked as a CFA manager once upon a time. Cfa actually called her when the franchise she worked at several states away came available. She uprooted her family and everything to move across the country and run one in a small town on Illinois, leaving Tennessee.

CFA's business model is very unique. But they're extremely successful for a reason. I've heard In N Out is run very similarly.

How much do CFA “operators” actually make? I’ve heard a variety of numbers.

In regards to In and Out. I did hear the manager in one in Texas talking about how they moved him all the way to Texas from California just to manage it. I guess that’s how they are well run cause I think they pay managers really well.

I love Quizno's and often wonder why those don't stay open

A close family member was in C-level management at Quiznos about 15-20 years ago. I'll provide some background:

1) Quiznos was initially a small, beloved "college kid" type franchise near DU's campus (not unlike Cane's). The son of a wealthy aviation lawyer convinces dad (and dad's friends) it's a great idea and they put a group together to buy/expand the business through the 90s.

2) They were known for treating their franchisees like absolute dog shite. You may be able to Google around and find stories, but Quiznos actually made headlines for awhile because franchise owners were losing their asses and committing suicide in at least one case. By way of example, something like 40-50% of the their franchises were not breaking even in the early 2000s.

3) Quzinos ingredients weren't "premium" per se, but they were of relatively decent quality...and in the restaurant business, that often means costly. As such, their sandwiches were more expensive than the major competitors (namely Subway). This was all well and good until the financial collapse of 2008/2009 where people were not keen on spending $12-15 on a damn sandwich at lunch, especially when they could go next door to Subway and get a slightly shittier version for $5.

3) The main market differentiator Quiznos traded on (i.e., toasting the sub, rather than just the bread itself) was easily replicated. Once Subway et al. started doing it, Quiznos became "just another sandwich place" with the distinction of also being somewhat expensive. This caused rapid contraction of stores and now there aren't but about 150 left in the US.

4) Quiznos was embroiled in a long class-action lawsuit with over 10,000 of their franchisees and eventually filed for bankruptcy around 2013-2014, and I'm not sure which scumbag PE firm owns Q these days, but the original ownership group fizzled out and sold, from what I understand. They got involved with Smashburger and a couple of other no-name concepts but are all mostly retired or dead.

I’ve always thought a RAK Outfitters would kill it in Ellijay but I don’t know if that guy franchises out or not.
