re: Baton Rouge or N Dallas? (Frisco, Prosper, SouthLake area)

McKinney might be a good fit for y’all. It’s getting bigger and all the good/bad it brings with it but it still has more of a smaller town feel than either Frisco or Prosper. The downtown area is unlike anything in Prosper or Frisco. The public schools are very good and there’s always McKinney Christian Academy.
The Apex Center, Trader Joe’s, Market Street, easy access to 121 and 75 roadways, a real downtown, etc.

quote:I lived in Allen for 7 years (met my wife there and my two kids were born there). We ended up moving to Lafayette to be near my parents. My kids will finish elementary school in a couple of years and we are strongly considering moving back. The Northern DFW suburbs have some of the best quality of life metrics in the entire south (schools, economics, local government services) but come with a price (we were paying 800/month in property taxes). We might stay here too, it all depends on what kind of job offers. I would say do it if the pay increase is $12k or more.
could transfer to the Frisco/Prosper area tomorrow for my job and it wouldn’t take my wife long to establish herself as well. I need the OT thoughts? Should I consider? Am I crazy for wanting to move?
We have truly great friends here that we consider family and we are very comfortable. My problem with BR are private schools are expensive as shite, crime is out of control, terrible leadership, and it’s always status quo here. I know the grass isn’t always greener, but sometimes it is.

Think of the Dallas suburbs as Raquel Welch in her prime, and Baton Rouge as Roseanne Barr, then choose wisely.

Are you trolling us with this question baw?

How is that even a question, Dallas and don't look back.

Do it... LOTS Louisiana transplants in Collin County. County has pretty much everything you need outside of major sports arena and you never have to venture to Dallas proper unless you choose to do so.
The area was much more enjoyable pre 2013 before the boom. Frisco has become Plano in the 80/90s and is quickly becoming a concrete jungle with lack of trees/grassy areas. There are tons of shopping/dining and nearly every school Kindergarten to High School are A+ public schools so that's a huge plus.
Only draw back is the property taxes and the pretentious self-entitlement that moved in with the boom. California transplants who left California compare it to Orange County.

That's not bad for Texas.

I have been a Collin County (Frisco/McKinney/Plano/Allen) resident since 2001, what I can tell you.
1. If you can move Collin County, just do it. I would tell that to anyone living anywhere in the United States that has children.
2. Every school system is probably on par or better than private schools in the South. The level of education here is 2nd to none for public schools.
3. It is hot and flat, but that should not be a culture shock from BR. Lower humidity will probably be welcome to you.
4. Frisco - Has become very large, however they have committed to smaller schools. They have around 10 high schools now, with the enrollment topping out around 2000 in each. Some say it is great that way and others disagree since it spreads resources thin.
5. Allen - Committed to the one HS model. There are over 5000 students in the HS, with the largest marching band in the country with 800 members. Kids are basically going to a Junior College when they get there. Cons are it is hard to stand out and be the top in anything (academics and sports), but very concentrated resources and some of the nicest schools and facilities 170 acre campus for HS
6. All the other cites will fall between those models. Prosper is really up and coming, got a pretty new HS and sports facilities as well. It currently is a little more quiet in the Prosper area, but that will change over the next 5 years with the extension of Dallas North Tollway.
7. McKinney is the County seat of Collin and is really unique in some ways. 3 6A high schools, but enrollment will be less than Allen. You will find some of the oldest neighborhoods and newest as well here. Nice downtown square area they have events at. You would want to live on the West side of US75.
8. Plano is on the southern side of Collin and there are great places to live there and more mature neighborhoods. It just seems a little congested now, and I would once again stay West of US 75.
9. Crime - we got it, but nothing like BR. Most of these cities are among the safest in Texas and the country.
10. Leadership - Collin and the cities are Republican, but not crazy to the right. It is not a purple county, but it is not dark red either.
11. Diversity - You better like people of color. My caucasian children are a majority minority in the schools. Most of the schools are not majority white.
12. The grass is greener here when compared to the whole state of Louisiana

But no state income tax. It’s a wash.

Move ASAP. I lived in Baton Rouge for 18 years. Moved to Dallas, near White Rock lake for 2 years and now 4 years 15 minutes east of Dallas. More to do, safter, better schools.

That’s a no brainer. DFW area is way better than anything Baton Rouge has to offer.
Be prepared for people everywhere all the time. Collin county is insanely growing and not stopping.
Come for Texit!

Mckinney also has a nice Octoberfest downtown every year with local breweries /imported beer, fresh brats in its 20 blocks of open container “bier garden”.

Go, go now. Kids get any older and you likely wont go

Southlake is a very different area than Frisco/Prosper/McKinney/Allen/Plano. Those five all cover the northern corridor spanning a 30 minute drive east to west to get across them.
I’ve been in the area for a decade or so and it’s home now. All of my family that visit from LA are amazed at how much development exists, infrastructure, and just the scale of the city. I remember when it “shocked” me on first arrival just how big of a city…but you get used to it quickly.

Unless you like to be around your friends that much, then it's a no brainer.

If you are considering relocating I'd do it when the kids are still young. Gets harder when they get older, into HS etc
This is why we looked into moving about as soon as our son was born. Wanted to do it before he started school.

Yeah, our youngest is in the 10th grade now. Might as well wait until she's done at this point.

my only thing is....when you say your wife will have to start over...what do you mean by that? like are you losing 150k a year job or what?
we were going to move to texas and an ill timed death of my father in law stopped the move about 2 weeks before we left. I have run the numbers....we were going to move to S houston area around league city or clearlake
1) my kids currently go to private school, although its elementary, when we added up the TX-property tax vs LA-state income tax + property tax + private school
it favored moving to texas. this was on a 800k home.
but 1 thing we didnt prepare for at first was after school care. Yours are old enough to prolly not worry about that but it was gonna cost us another 800-1k a month to have to do private daycare after school because the schools there dont offer it at the school.
i will say i wish we had moved. we have same kind of life you do, but i wanted it for my kids and honestly north texas is even nicer. I have an aunt and cousin in highland park area and love that part of dallas. unfortunately we are stuck here with my wifes work and we have tons of family here and have a great life.
there are a lot of pros, lots of pros, but if your wife is going to have to be starting over....well that is something to think about.

Unless you are moving to Haiti I’m not sure that BR can beat any place.
Especially Texas, BR loses out all day.
