Not auto, constant very dim. IE visible in pitch black without having to trigger the light function.

I've gotten spoiled to tritium.

This was on Temu today. Looks like a good price at $18,999.

I don’t care for digital for the same reason.

I have an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean that I love. Great watch for the price, especially if you can pick one up a year or two old.

I actually have a Sub 16610 that I bought used around 2008 before the prices went nuts. I think I picked it up for about $5,500 back then.

The Planet Ocean is a 43mm, technically bigger than the Sub, but wears a lot better than the Sub. I usually wear the Omega 5 times for every one time I wear the Sub.

I like everything about digital except that. Everything else about them is excellent. If I'm going to have electricity in the watch then having a rotary 12 hour dial doesn't make much sense (except for a spring drive because it's awesome).

I don't understand why with these amazing solar/battery setups a constant very dim backlight wouldn't be easily achievable at very little loss to battery life. Who out there needs 10 months of reserve power in pitch darkness and wouldn't be ok with 5 months instead when the payoff is constant backlight?

Or, just put a tritum tube behind the screen if the above is unfathomably unacceptable.

Anyone ever had the issue of those watches that mean something to you not being ones you want to wear? One a gift on a special occasion, one my dad's (still living, just already handed it off to me). I'll keep his - it's a classy DJ even though it's 36 and not my favorite to wear.

Another is an AK I never wear and I doubt my sons would eventually. I'd like for them to at least all have one that I wore with some regularity. I'm not against impractical collections, but seems like something of a waste not to parlay it into a different piece.

I'm rough on watches. I wear them fishing several times a week, wear them when working on my machinery, feeding cattle, sweating my butt off in 100 degree heat, etc. So automatics are a no go.

I like my Bertucci A-4T with NATO strap. It's handled a lot of abuse. My previous Luminox shite the bed in less than two years.

Well that's just not true. I do all those things and more, and have had an auto on my wrist for 10 years of it and it's been trouble free outside of one specific issue that can also be handled by selecting the correct auto (magnetism from very powerful permanent magnets).

You just need to get the right one, if you want an automatic. The ole saying for identifying if a rolex is authentic or not is to get nolan ryan to throw it against a brick wall for you. If it stays working, it's authentic.

There is no need for a watch anymore.

I have a couple watches that have sentimental value, but rarely or never get worn. I have my grandfathers Hamilton Sawyer form the 1950's. Still runs great but, I just don't like wearing it, because I don't want something to happen to it and watches from that era were very small for todays standards. I think it's only like 30mm. That said, I'll never get rid of it.

Oh really? You know that nobody has a real, practical use for a watch anymore? Amazing insight.

I'm sure you're correct in that a Rolex could handle my shenanigans. But outside of traveling 6 times a year for vacations, I wear bib overalls everyday and will go a week or more at a time without seeing a single human besides my wife.

I don't think my animals and wildlife would be impressed with me wearing a Rolex.

I see Obtuse has given you all of the requisite options. I'll say this though, I have never and will never buy a watch as an investment. There are lots that are investment grade but the market fluctuates like everything else so buy what you love to wear. And I agree with Obtuse to start with something inexpensive in the PC world and see how you enjoy it. Then work yourself up and into the world of higher end watches.

Next big watch will be an Omega Aqua Terra, but if we are talking higher end I've been loving the AP Royal Oaks lately.

Wife got me a Bulova Super Seville for Christmas, and it's pretty badass.

It doesn't need to be a Rolex, and if all you'd get out of having one is impressing other people than it's a colossal waste of money IMO. You have to like good watches (a lot) for something like a Rolex to be worth the price of admission. It'd certainly stand up to the beating. You can get several other automatics for far less money that could take it, like most Seikos.

You gotta want / appreciate an automatic to deal with the shenanigans that accompany it. I'm just saying that if you want one, don't let your lifestyle stop you from getting one. There's plenty out there that can take it.
