The shape of that watch just does not look good on me. Same for Patek. They look weird on my wrist. And just personally I will never buy a watch with an integrated bracelet. I love to be able to switch from rubber to bracelet to leather strap and do it frequently. I don't want to be stuck with 1 choice.

Cannot downvote this enough. Pay $800 for a smart watch and in 5 years it's outdated worth $75 on eBay. $800 can get you a solid, timeless watch that will increase in value as well.

That's totally fair. She also got me recently an Orient Bambino with a leather strap so I can switch between metal and leather. Just getting into the watch game, so still sticking to the sub $1000 watches.

Or you can pay thousands more for a pretentious status symbol that does zero more than a $30.00 timex will.

We did a survey one time and the & of people that bought a watch for conspicuous consumption was less than 10%. That's an astonishing number. You'll never understand and that's ok too.

As someone who likes both I see your point. That said, smart watches are useful, especially if you run/golf/hike/etc.

But I also can't imagine the number of watches that are going to reliably increase in value from 800 bucks is high

And to the extent it is, would be a crapshoot

I'm sure you're correct in that a Rolex could handle my shenanigans. But outside of traveling 6 times a year for vacations, I wear bib overalls everyday and will go a week or more at a time without seeing a single human besides my wife. I don't think my animals and wildlife would be impressed with me wearing a Rolex.

Wear it for how it makes you feel, not for how others feel about you

I’m sitting upstairs at my home alone while working and I’m wearing my watch.

I really love doing that. I have on an Omega Speedmaster Professional from 1972 right now and I have it on a $16 rubber strap from Amazon.

It doesn't need to be a Rolex, and if all you'd get out of having one is impressing other people than it's a colossal waste of money

Well, Rolex is a brand/ image company now, less of a timepiece /tool watch company.

Rolex is still king of them all.

same, would love to double-downvote this post.

maybe sometime i'll dig into my desk drawer of dead smartwatches. i went through that phase for like 2 years starting w/ the kickstarter pebble.

my love of manual/automatic watches started in the 1970s and has never wavered.

i grew up being fascinated with my granddad's omega, my dad's Bulova and the seiko my parents bought me for graduation.

or 100s of plastic tank models or 1700 different types of bourbon that more or less taste the same or collecting athletic shoes or bicycles or cigars...

why do you care what other people enjoy?

I love the look of this Bulova Mil Ships but they really screwed the pooch on the 16mm lug. I know it’s supposed to be a recreation of the original with the original specs but it just looks too out of place. I wish there was a way to put a 20 mm strap on a 16 mm lug

my daily is zenith type 20 pilots watch that NOBODY would recognize as being different than a timex or any other department store watch.

it makes me very happy; doesn't even have a date complication and you can pick one up on the secondary market for around 5k so its not remotely on the 'pretentious' scale.

i also have 3 overflowing watch boxes and while many have turned to box queens, i'll still rotate among most them.

I bought this and returned it. It was just really thick for me (TWSS), but a beautiful watch nonetheless. It was thicker than all of my watches, including my Rolex. Others don't seem to mind though, reading about it on Reddit, etc.
