By the expressions on their faces, it didn’t seem as if it shown as bright when the silver medals were hung around their necks.

Nope, no way no how does Silver shine as bright.
Silver tarnishes so easily in houses heated with natural gas. Any exposure to oxygen causes silver to loose its luster. This is useful when going south of the US border and buying silver jewelry: if it's tarnished, it's real.
