I'd suspect that the primary purpose of the get togethers is team building. Your wife/SO isn't part of the team. You not attending signals that you're not a team player. It's like having to attend the company Christmas - whoops! I mean Holiday - party and behaving yourself. It's a party, but it's a WORK party.
