I was fishing about 20 miles out of Venice, Fl. Caught a bonita and right when I reaching over the side of the boat to grab it, a barracuda came flying out of the water and snapped it right off of my line.

Scared the living shite out of me. That thing is just muscle and teeth and it was about 6 inches away from leaving me w/ a nub.

Wild pig charged me.

Lucky for me a 35 whelen round to the face at 15 steps does lots of damage.

I can believe it. A Chi-Com grenade blew up 4 feet from me one night. I caught only three pieces of shrapnel in my side but, wow, the concussion threw me a few feet and busted an ear drum. I felt like Tom Hanks in “SPR” at D-Day. If it had been a US-made frag it would have ... well, I wouldn’t be typing this.

Black bear at 60-80 feet, Mount Sterling, NC on a trail. Sketchy for me, he/she was cool.

Snakes, gators and bull sharks. Some scared the crap out of me but I have never been stalked to be eaten that I know of.

The tiger story circling your patrol gave me the frissons. What an experience ! Was he just walking around growling or did he let out some roars. ?

Make a thread and tell us some stories if you don’t mind. I and others would like to hear them.

This is not the thread for telling war stories.

But in this instance we were on ambush about 3 miles outside of Khe Sanh. Ten Marines and one tiger (they can’t purr) which was in low growl mode like an idling 18-wheeler. Just kept pacing back in forth down in a small ravine about 10 yards from us.

I imagine it smelled us (or saw us) and was nervous. We could only hear it and see it’s shadow.

We were all kinda freaking, out of fear and excitement. Amazing, if it was gooks — people — we would not have hesitated to blow them away immediately. But “it was a frickin’ tiger, man”

We even radioed it to our CO. He ordered for us to wait about two more minutes, then frag it. Me and six other guys pulled out frags and waited. But the beast stood its ground and we wussed out. Eventually he eased on off and we sighed and chuckled in the pitch black of the Vietnam jungle. Plus, we didn’t want to give away our position because it was early and we had a long night ahead. Like most ambushes it turned out to be a lot of stress and lost sleep.

Today, I would think It must have looked like Mike just pacing back and forth in his cage. We were on his turf. Glad we didn’t kill it and happy he didn’t eat one of us.

I had what appeared to be about a 6 ft tiger shark take about half of a 40-45 tuna as we were trying to gaff it.

Same kind of thing happens down here by Boca Grande pass. Massive hammerheads and bull sharks tear up 150lb tarpon right next to the boat.

Crazy to see how big those things are up close.

I met a water moccasin at Camp Ball. He was the coolest fricking wild animal I've ever met. He handled my rude arse interruption in his affairs calmly and with grace. He slowly looked at me sideways and was kind enough to allow me to GTFO of business without trying to bite me. In would have liked to have bought that snake a beer.

Was once camping here with a couple of buddies. We needed firewood so we headed out to search the shore a couple hundred yards from camp, me in a kayak and the other two guys in a canoe. I'm in the lead and try to really build momentum to beach my kayak on shore. I land, look up, and at the edge of a line of bushes, maybe 20' from me, is a huge brown bear. I was speechless and my friends still haven't noticed. Thankfully I managed to quickly un-beach myself.

Had another encounter once descending below treeline while coming down from the Grand. It was dark. We didn't see the bear but we could damn sure smell him. It was scary as frick.

The episode where the woman and her dog were attacked by a rabid raccoon (it may not have even been rabid) while on a walk was crazy. The single raccoon nearly killed the woman!
I couldn’t believe that when I watched it. I was like “how shitty are your survival instincts that you can’t handle a damn raccoon?”

Not really wild but they were mad. Working at Aunts cattle ranch in Oklahoma. Had group in giving shots, sawing nubs of horns off. Went for lunch and they drank all the water was a little hot to be working the cattle that day. Sent me into fill trough at 14 and not a regular at cattle working was not ready for the two that charged me. Barley made it up the fence. Everyone thought was pretty funny. I felt like a rodeo clown. I may have been set up.

Not “dangerous” but...

Last summer hiking on the AT, my son was in front and we walk by a fallen tree. I hear the rattle and stop and start to look around. He keeps walking and I said “alajones4, stop”

He’s like “what?” Then I saw it about four feet from the trail sitting on the fallen log. He’d walked right by it.

Had a black bear sniffing around my front door. To say their sniffing is a lot louder than a dog is a gross understatement.

After that the lights went on and I hit the remote to blow the trucks horn before leaving the house at night. And I'd look around from the doorway before walking out.
