When I was in freight brokerage I would cold call customers on slower days trying to grow the business. It wasn’t too bad but you knew right away if it was going to go anywhere though. Customers either had a hard time getting trucks and we’re desperate for help or didn’t. Not much I can sell that would change that

I did an on campus job that I had to cold call alumni for donations. I thought it would be something easy to do until you get to one and the person you are calling for passed away. Talk about not knowing what to say because you were originally calling to ask for money.

Consumer on phone: "Let me discuss it with my wife and we'll let you know."
Sales person: "Ok, I'll hold."

Imagine cold calling for donations right now while all our universities are wasting millions of dollars on D&I (I’m not against d&i, but it’s not worth the $ spent on it,) being woke, and other BS, and the fanbase is pissed about it.

Sales company VP checking in. A good cold calling salesman can be worth their weight in gold. I make sure they get ALL the incentives to continue enjoying their jobs.

Yes, cold calling is a question of degree.
Some of the toughest are the guys who start out at retail brokerage firms. I did a summer internship at one of those places and a broker gave me a phone book style listing of people in nearby nice neighborhoods to try to get leads. It was brutal. Calling complete strangers and asking them for money is not for me.

Ive been in sales since the mid 90s and in a highly competitive field.... Advertising,
The turnover rate is crazy. Most people don’t make it 3 months,

Social Media. Get this, it triggers additional investigation in a security clearance background investigation these days if you DON'T have a social media presence. They consider it out of the ordinary. I set up a FB and Twitter last time my Clearance renewed and then took it down after.

The first thing that came to mind:
I cold called for a while, first as a kid in the neighborhood selling greeting cards. Later as an adult.
You have to have thick skin, be quick on your feet to pick up any potential “in”, and understand that you are going to strike out alot more than you hit.
I did Sales for over a decade because the firm needed me to do it. I was really good at it but eventually I ended up running the entire organization and was able to not have to sell on a daily basis. It was after about a year of no longer doing Sales that I realized not only did I not miss it, I really didn’t like doing it.
