You have other options besides a diamond. You can get a white sapphire or a white zircon (not CZ) for a fraction of the cost. And they are beautiful.

Go to the Pricescope message boards & read a ton. They are experts at getting the best quality for your money.
My gut feeling is that lab diamonds are overpriced. Even if they’re structurally identical to diamonds, they will only get cheaper as the Chinese start making them. I wouldn’t be willing to pay 70% the price of a natural diamond. At all.

paid $2k for my wife's ring and it was a custom rose gold one-off i picked up from penny preville's HQ in NYC because they were still working on it when we got to NYC and she freaking loves it.
no $20k solitaire that is just going to get lost for this guy.
