Take him to nearby closest big city and do something you don’t ordinarily do
Baton Rouge go to top of state capitol or state museum
New Orleans go to d day museum for day
Other city
Find something interesting
Get outside somewhere

Fatherhood is a sacrifice. Learn to enjoy what he likes. I became a dad (deliberately) at 48. I'm knocking on the door of 60 and my son is still 11. I never played any sports in my life other than of soccer in my life. He had no interest and liked baseball. I'm now a Little League coach and were headed to a pro game to watch in a couple of weekends. The wife (no pics) and I think monster truck shows are stupid, but we go with him when they are in the area. You'll be ok Dad!

Does he like music? Take him to a concert or festival to see a band he likes. My 16-year-old loves doing that shite with me. Also, maybe ask him if there is something he'd really like to do, but hasn't had a chance yet. It's your kid. I know you know how to communicate with him. Good luck!

I do things based on my kids interest and in return they usually dont mind joining me for mine, when the time comes. Ive seen concerts i typically wouldnt go to, theater, comic cons, museums, all sorts of things ive enjoyed going to that I wouldn't have never experienced if it weren't for them. They opened my world, like ive got to open theirs.

Sooo just do more of this? The answer is in your post. Minor league, college, community college, high school games.
Start with ones in your area. Then branch out and make it a thing to visit all in your state and go from there

Take your boy up to Clark Creek Park for hiking. Great time up there. Elevations are high for the area and several waterfalls.

My son and I have been taking section hiked on the Appalachian Trail since he was 17. It’s a great experience for both of us. So far, we have hiked over 700 miles.
Not up for that? There’s plenty of day hikes in various national parks.

I did this today.
I caught most, but he caught these two.
He is also now graduated from zebco to spinning reel.
And the can crushing at the front of the boat. Very important.

My kid told me a joke on the boat today-
"How do you make a plumber sad?"
Punchline-
"Kill his family."
True story.

Lots of good advice in here. What matters is that you care and want to make a connection.

Interestingly, now that he's older he will sit down and watch sports on tv. Just would not do it when he was young.
Excluding huge games- A lot of sports a boring as heck on tv - I think most of us old folks like them because the format and parameters are predictable and ultimately the drama is relatively inconsequential. Your brain can enjoy it on autopilot after a long day
Less appealing to a 12 year old with unlimited energy, and a world to discover
