90's? The Keys were like that in the 70's...

I inherited a condo at "Key West by the sea" on the south side of Roosevelt Boulevard. You had smathers beach right across the road.
I sold it in 2015 for a pretty penny.
Kinda wish I had it back, but Pop is gone and those fishing memories are banked.
its definitely a spot you need to plan out when visiting.
People hate politics unless its bogo points or Conch vs White coral issues and dock renovations..
They fight and drop hands in a minute about those two...

I know a group that goes regularly but they are older - 60s and up. When they talk about it, all I hear about is drinking all day and bar hopping at night.

I grew up there, then lived there again for a few years late 90s. I don’t go back. The water is amazing, no other redeeming qualities.
Where did you go to school? I'm a Conch. Graduated HS 1981. The island is magical.

Must be a lot more alternative lifestylers on here than I though
Or you just don’t get the keys and sound miserable AF. Islamorada, big pine, or going down during lobster season is amazing.

Been that way for at least 30 years afaik.

The Keys don’t particular cater to or want tourists unless you are one of the few who own one of those shitty hotels. Businesses survive on locals, seasonal residents, people who own 2nd homes and holiday weekends. And as someone who has lived here since LBJ was President, I can tell you that South Florida doesn’t give a shite about controlling development.

I used to teach at KWHS.
A lot of people come to Key West with unrealistic expectations. They assume that because it’s an island it’s surrounded with beaches. No one that lives here goes to a beach.

Just spent a week in the Keys. I know Florida controls development and regulations down there. But geez what a disappointment. Place reminds me of PCB back in the early 90s. A lot of shitty run down hotels and buildings. At least cut the freaking grass in the medians. Every 5 miles cops taking radar is not very welcoming. Key West absolutely sucks. Two shitty unmaintained beaches and absolutely nothing to do. Unless your old or gay. The chickens everywhere was the coolest thing there. I fed them even though they said it was a federal offense to do so.
You sound like the guys whining about going to the beach because it’s hot, sandy, they drag a wagon train of crap with them, and their wives/kids make their life miserable.
You’re probably posting from your phone. In your hand you probably hold more computing power than NASA used in the moon program. Why didn’t you do any research?
My wife and I love the Keys. Usually rent a place in Marathon, but we’ve stayed at Truman Annex in Key West.
Lots to do down there if you look. It appears some people are just miserable and love complaining.

There's a few good titty bars on Duval... Unless you were frequenting the fruitier establishments down the street.
Speaking of which, I was walking down the street in key west and a guy burst out of a business wearing Mickey mouse ears carrying a 4 year old boy he looked at me and said "no bathroom worth going to in there mate, only naked old men in a pool, disgusting" in the thickest Australian accent possible. I was like yeah man that's what a Turkish bathhouse is, especially one with a rainbow flag on the door.

I was marooned in 2010 when I sailed in on Musica (38ft Aerodyne) taking 2nd place in feeder race from Ft Lauderdale.
We were there for race week and the owner had emergency appendectomy.
I stayed all week and I don’t drink alcohol. There are more art galleries than bars and that’s saying something.
The art galleries stay open to midnight!

We went on a bachelor party about 15?years ago and had a damn good time at one of the strip clubs. No cover charge, reasonable drink prices, and totally nice girls.
The girls were cool as shite and the $20 private dances in the back were awesome.
We snorkeled, drank all day and night, and ate some damn fine meals.
Someone would have to try hard to not enjoy Key West.
