Mostly a lot of money is my guess.
It depends on your definition of “a lot of money”.
It’s almost always in the hundreds of thousands of dollar range, and nowhere near millions.
While a that’s lot of money, it’s pathetically low for a respectable American to sell out his country, especially when he’s putting his fellow pilots in potential harm’s way.

This training was a defense service under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Brown, a U.S. person under the ITAR, lacked the required license from the State Department’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC) to provide that training to foreign persons or foreign military units.
State directs ITAR compliance consulting with DoD and other "interested" governmental agencies that "wish to remain anonymous" in my few experiences with exports to China, which our DC attorney handled as point, including conference calls with the U.S. agencies involved.
If he didn't get an ITAR license, as alleged was required, he's fricked.

Well, he started a flight school and his only students were a bunch of Saudis, but one day they never came back. So he switched to training Chinese to fight against the US. I mean, he’s just using his skills in retirement to make a living. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Death penalty offense. Do it. Make an example of him.

Imagine it's easy to be addicted to the adrenaline, the lifestyle, and the type men he'd be around. To now being a commercial cargo pilot and doing flight simulation.
Another form of drug and intoxicating to the point of addiction and tossing your life away.

Absolutely needs to be hung

If ever someone needed to be charged with treason and the death penalty imposed, this is it.

He's a treasure trove of information about the Chinese and cage incarceration would hurt him even more. Death's but and easy outlet at this point.
From free as a bird to mostly solitary if I had my way. (eta) so that even his limted prison interactions would be ghastly as hell.

Why is he not in custody already? That’s death penalty shite if true.

This is straight up treason. There can be only one sentence for this…
If you play your cards right, you can get a presidential pardon, a free trip to Israel, and become personal friends with a US ambassador, Mr Pollard.

People say this often. But all but very very few defendants fight tooth and nail for life in prison instead of lethal injection

If they use those skills to aid a foreign sovereign, is that treason?
Without the blessing from the US Government, yes.

Or is it only treason if it’s China?
Doubly yes.
