I mean, you can’t have your toddlers driving your car. That’s just bad parenting.

Agree. This is horse shite. As long as the insured driver is driving, it should be all that matters. What happens if one is driving a friend. No coverage bc not listed?

Glad to hear GEICO is going to cover it because that’s legitimately an honest mistake to make.

This is a Michigan thing.

Michigan law requires unlimited Personal Injury Protection. It is why auto is so high there.

Lots of scams and phony treatment schemes and why they require names of all in household.

The damage to the car could have cost the family between $5,000 and $15,000, but Vogel says Geico later told them they plan to cover it despite the issue with the form. The couple now hopes their story serves as a cautionary tale to others.

Seems like the title of the article should have been different to reflect Geico reversed itself and the driver just wanted people to know what could happen.

I am surprised Geico didn’t try to take out the additional premium that they did not pay for not disclosing the kids in the household and therefore in the car with them a lot. Form must have been messed up.

Parents Kara Vogel and Carson Howatt say they were going through a roundabout on Christmas Eve when another driver didn’t yield and hit the front of their car.

It also seems like there is more to this unless Michigan is a no fault state for auto accidents.

Michigan is no fault for injury.

Michigan Personal Injury Protection

This sounds like some form of no-fault insurance. If so, it's handled much differently than conventional insurance situations.

Correct. MI is a no fault state.

The denial doesn't make sense. Their claim was for vehicle damage, not personal bodily damage.

Smart on GEICO's part. This would absolutely have ended poorly for them.

Why do you believe Louisiana is the second worst state for insurance? Do you have personall knowledge or just parroting what you have heard others say? Any personal anecdotal evidence?

PI attorney advertisements incessantly on TV and Radio along with highways polluted with endless billboards?

I get that insurance companies advertise too.

But it must be a very lucrative business when Louisiana's exclusively PI legal firms can afford to advertise at the high frequency and cost they incur.

Only one brain cell needed to know who is paying for that.

You can add high $$$$ political contributions buying our politicians legal protection to the mix as well.

Remember when Tort Reform passed to fix our outrageously high auto insurance rates? With the promise it would work?

In 2025 we won again, #1 in the nation for the highest auto insurance rates.

Absolute non story. Underwriting reports (ordered at every policy change or renewal) would have pulled house holding information and adjusted their rate based on what was returned.

They were charging them the rate they would get had they filled out the form appropriately anyway.

I personally dealt with putting insurance companies into rehabilitation/receivership in this state.

You're trying to be county to that guy for no reason.

Did they claim the children were injured? Why the frick wouldn’t GEICO cover the damage to the car? Even preliminarily. The car and the children are separate issues. If they claimed injury to the kids, I could see the argument - “Hey, we didn’t underwrite that risk, so it isn’t covered.” But that shite has nothing to do with the car. fricking idiot agent at GEICO. Glad they got it figured out at least.

I can see Geico’s reasoning because people that have kids especially two kids tend to drive a lot more than a household of two people. Since they will be driving more there is more risk for an accident. I would imagine their premium will increase with two children in the household.

I don’t even know how to go about telling my insurance who household members are. It will only let me add drivers
