I've done it several times a year for over a decade for moderate to large groups (50 to 500) and still hate it passionately.

He's not wrong. I'm not sure it makes me any better and I don't think it makes me much less nervous but I do believe (from hearing from coworkers) that I at least appear less nervous.

A very large part of my job is giving presentations. I was horribly overwhelmed at first but now that shite is the easiest part of my week. You’ll ease into it.

You should lighten the mood and say, "Damn, is it really hot in this room right now or is it just me?"

Don't be an "ummm" guy, and definitely don't be a "like" girl. It's distracting as hell.

The trick to public speaking really is to find a way to ignore your basic impulses/instincts - like crossing your arms, standing behind a podium, talking too fast, and mumbling.

Instead, walk out there and open yourself up to the audience. Speak clearly and stay away from "umms" by knowing that silence is OK. It can even be powerful.

That being said, I've taken note of the above points and still struggle with a lot of it. It takes practice, and like with most things some people are just naturally gifted over others.

I have to give presentations on the reg. Best of luck!

To commiserate with you, I'll admit that a weird thing that I've noticed about myself is that when I'm nervous, I feel like I have to pee, even though I don't. It's an odd experience that I've learned to ignore. I don't know how many other people that happens to, but it's out in the open now.

I always find opening up with a good racist joke will lighten up the mood of the room ...

The best cure for a fear of public speaking is knowing what you're talking about.

Whatever you do, don't get all emotional and start crying.

Practice in front of mirror. Run through it again and again until you get it right. If not the full thing, at least practice the first 5 or so minutes to make sure liftoff is smooth and you get on a roll.

I went into a tail spin before after a shaky start (anxiety is a bitch) and promised myself I'd never let it happen again.

And if you hate it, more likely you’re going to suck at it and it’s gonna be boring AF for all 50 people.

Must be nice when the only public speaking you are required to do is ask regular or spicy.

If you know all the people then why is it a big deal? You’re just talking to your coworkers. You deal with these people every day
